In the series-ending episode of the TV show Fringe, there was an emotional moment between Walter and Peter Bishop. Our graphic features the quote: 'You are my favorite thing, Peter ... my very favorite thing' and also has an image of the white tulip that has always been a symbol of strength for Walter.
If you're just tuning in now though, it's probably best if you do not pass go and do not collect your 200 Red Vines until you go back and catch up on this series.

It's just another day in Boston-turned-Observerville and Peter is standing on the sidewalk of a busy street looking around at his surroundings when he starts having flashes of things happening, all tinged in the blue Observer-vision he acquired at the end of last week's episode. He sees an Observer walking along, bumping into a woman in a dark coat who says, "Excuse me," in irritation as he continues on his way without acknowledging his faux pas. A car stops. It already has a couple Observers inside. They motion to the one on the street, calling him Mueller. They tell him they have a meeting they have to attend and he gets in the car with them and it drives off.

Peter snaps out of his little moment (head tilt) and checks his watch. He begins to cross the street as the light turns green, causing a driver to have to stop to avoid running him over. As a Loyalist leans out of his car window to give Peter a piece of his mind, Peter spots the car from his vision a few vehicles back. In the meantime the traffic signal has turned red again causing the people waiting to miss their opportunity to go through it.

Peter finishes crossing the street and watches as the events in his vision begin to unfold before him: Mueller walks down a flight of steps with his briefcase, a vendor hands a patron a drink, Mueller bumps into Dark Coat Woman, (it's red in living color, by the way). Mueller crosses the street near the Observer car but is not called over to it.

Peter glances around and sees one of the 'Etta Resist' posters plastered to the side of a building. A little smile curls one side of his mouth up. (This, for anyone that cares, is the little smile he has after the explosion in the preview when the fedora blows down to the street. So previews, evil temptresses that they are, definitely make things seem not as they actually happen.) Peter pulls out his cell phone and makes a call. When the person on the other end picks up, Peter says, "Anil, I'm going to need your help with something."

FRINGE OPENING CREDITS TIME

Peter is now entering the lab via the underground grate. He has a cardboard box with him that has four neon helium canisters in it. Walter questions where he has been for so long and is a little disappointed to see Peter didn't bring back more than four but accepts it when Peter said that the bartering process took more convincing than he thought it would.

Peter greets Olivia and Astrid while Astrid looks over the bounty he has brought. She says she'll get to work after breakfast. Walter tells her, "Get started. The world's not going to save itself. Chop-chop."

Olivia wants to know why Peter went out without her. He explains that it was early and he didn't want to wake her up. Olivia reads between the lines and says, "That's one way to put it. The other is that you didn't sleep. Again." Peter confesses that she's right but he's fine, everything is A-okay. Olivia's not so convinced and tells him he needs to get some rest.

A vehicle pulls up outside with Loyalist guards inside. They get out and look around a bit as the team watches them through the murky windows of the lab. After a few moments the guards get back in the car and clear out.

They start lasering the amber and are able to extract 'Tape 5'. As they watch it, Video Walter shows the camera a photograph of a grooved cylinder. (They've been seen before in some of the previous episodes.) He explains that these objects are beacons that enable the Observers to locate different points in space-time. Walter and his band of merry man and women are going to need two of these things.

Video Walter shows them a layout of a building that Walter recognizes as a lab at Kelvin Genetics that he and William Bell designed. Video Walter tells them to go there and find two yellow doors. What lies beyond those doors is Bell's storage area. It is there that two of the beacons are being housed. To gain entrance through the doors they will need Bell's handprint.

Astrid reminds Walter that they have Bell's severed hand and this must be what they have been holding on to it for. She also reminds him that pre-ambering, Bell had told Walter he wanted to help him defeat the Observers. However, when the time became convenient, Bell sold out Walter to get on the Observer's good side.

Walter says that now he remembers. He was being tortured and there was another man there who kept asking, "Is it safe?" Walter managed to escape from his captors with Bell's help, but then Bell turned him back over to the Invaders. Astrid breaks in gently to inform Walter, "Walter, that's from the movie 'Marathon Man.'"

Peter tries to help so he brings up that Walter called him in Boston saying he needed his assistance. Then Walter sent Olivia to retrieve the Thought Unifier at Grand Central Station. By the time Peter got back to help Walter and Astrid, William Bell was with them. The Observers found out where they were and they figured out that Bell must've been the one to rat out their location. That's when Walter Ambered them.

Since Bell's genuineness is now in question Astrid and Olivia wonder if the cylinders are where they are supposed to be or if they even exist. The only way to find out is to go look. Walter says, "Fire up the laser, Agnes. Let's get that hand out of Amber."

Some time passes and the team arrives outside of what was once the lab Walter and Bell created. It's now been reduced to piles of rubble. Walter shares with the group, "I used to drop acid right over there and watch the ships come in from the bay."

Facing a large pile of rocks, Walter gestures and explains that the underground storage unit doors would be around there. To the human eye it would be impossible to see where exactly they were located, but using his bionic Observer-vision Peter is able to tell where they are. "The doors are there," he confirms as he points. Olivia says his name questioningly so he quickly notes that it makes engineering sense for them to be there. (It's definitely not the super-x-ray vision he has sprouted, nope, not at all.) Olivia is actually concerned because there is a trickle of blood coming out of Peter's ear. He wipes at it and looks alarmed.

Walter checks out his ear while Olivia wants to know if this could be due to the anti-matter baton that was set off when they destroyed the shipping lane. Walter says an examination is in order when they get back to the lab. Peter assures Walter that he's fine.

The group tosses around some ideas on how to get around the debris to the storage area below, but discards them for various reasons. Then Walter says, "We go through it." Peter's comm rings and he announces that it's Anil and excuses himself to go talk to him.

Anil explains that he wasn't able to exchange briefcases with the Observer he was following. (I take it this was a plan they talked about that we weren't privy to.) Peter doesn't understand because he knows that the Observer should've sat at a bench and then forgotten his briefcase when he got up to leave. At this point Anil was supposed to make the exchange. Anil tells him it didn't go down like that. The Observer did sit on the bench but he took his briefcase with him when he got up. "That's impossible. Wait there, I'm coming to you." Peter says.

He rejoins the group. They have decided that they need to talk to Nina Sharp. Since she works at the Ministry of Science she's got all kinds of fancy toys that might be able to help them out. Peter says while they go talk to Nina he has to go see Anil. Anil has some information for him that he didn't want to share over the comm system.

Peter studies Olivia for a moment then smiles and says, "You've got that look on your face." "What look?" Olivia wants to know. Peter actually chuckles before telling her, "The look that says, 'I'm worried about you.'" Olivia asks if she should be worried about Peter. "Absolutely not," he assures her. They head off in separate direction with Olivia not looking so convinced.

At the Ministry of Science in Brooklyn, NY, Nina Sharp motors her wheel chair along a walkway next to a fountain. A woman runs after her calling her name. She catches up to Nina and hands her an envelope. After looking over the contents inside, Nina tells the lady to push back her meetings and that she will be gone from the office for awhile.

Nina meets Olivia on a small bridge. This scene was so heartfelt. They greet each other while Walter and Astrid look on from the background. Nina tearfully offers her condolences regarding Etta's death, saying, "I'm so sorry for your loss. Etta was very special to me." Olivia asks for her help so they can get into the storage area.

As they move along in a group, talking about what to do, a man with a Loyalist tattoo takes an extra long look at Walter as he bustles past. Walter falters in his conversation a bit, having been unnerved by the man. Nina tells them there is some Observer tech that she has that will evaporate molecules of a solid object turning them to gas. This is the device that would be most beneficial to their efforts. Nina departs from them, informing them they will meet again on the South Side of the building in ten minutes time.

They reconvene in a parking garage. Nina wants to know if Walter is mad at her for telling Simon and Etta how to re-implant the missing pieces of his brain. He says he isn't because he knows that in order to implement his plan he needed to be at full brain power. Walter admits that he has undergone some personality changes since his brain bits were reintroduced. Nina says, "The tissues are reintegrating faster than I thought."

When he questions her about it, Nina tells Walter she is not seeing signs of him slipping back into who he used to be, although she does throw in the caveat that he would know better than she would. Walter says, "The man I was before, he was consumed by ambition, by hubris. He never cared about anyone. All he cared about was walking with the Gods. It's different this time. I'm different. I have Peter. He won't let me become that man again."

A metal door rolls up and a man in a white lab coat comes out. Nina addresses him as Hastings. She instructs him, "Give Dr. Bishop anything he wants." At Hastings' awed look she says, "Yes, that Dr. Bishop." Hastings respectfully defers to Walter, mentioning that it would be an honor.

Walter looks pleased at this and gives Nina a little smile. When he is no longer facing her Nina's face falls into a worried mask.

At the park Peter is with Anil and making him go over again what transpired when the Observer arrived there. Peter questions him as to whether anyone had any interaction with the Observer, whose name is Royce, particularly a little girl playing with a yellow ball. Anil expresses surprise that Peter knows this detail. Peter glosses over that, firing off statements in rapid succession. (Observer head tilt) As Anil recounts his version of events he mentions that Royce was talking on his comm.

Peter stops him, saying that him being on his comm was the missing variable he didn't see and caused the chain of events to go astray. Anil doesn't understand, no doubt doubly confused by Peter's reference to 'seeing' what was going to happen.

Peter has another blue flash of visions where he sees Royce handing his briefcase over to a clerk for her to store it while he dines. Peter hands Anil a folded piece of paper, in the process acknowledging that Anil wants answers but telling him he has to trust him.

On the paper that Peter has given him is an address. Peter wants him to go there and wait outside. Anil mentions that this address is in a Baldie precinct. Peter says, "At exactly 6:17, Royce and another Observer named Mueller will walk into that building. (Head Tilt.) Call me when they do." Anil agrees to do so and Peter leaves. Anil gazes after him with an expression of concern. There is quite a bit of that in this episode.

Peter helps himself to someone's unoccupied car and first I thought he hot-wired it, but after watching it again it looks like he just touches something on the system and the car starts. (Possibly another Observer power coming out?)

My closed captioning shows that a conversation takes place somewhere off-screen during this time, but I don't hear a damn thing. Then the conversation fades to indistinct chatter. I think this is just supposed to show how Peter is now hearing everything at once and that it's overwhelming because he winces and grabs his temple before beginning to shudder and shake. With a groan he settles back down and puts the car in gear.

The next scene starts with a shot of cubbies that each have an Observer fedora housed in them. At a table, a group of Observers sit and a waiter brings a plate of food over. It looks like ham covered in pepper or some kind of dark spice with a bunch of jalapeno peppers on the side. Plus, there's another whole plate of peppers in the middle of the table.

Peter walks up to the front desk where the woman he saw in his vision is standing. He hands her a briefcase and she turns to put it on a shelf behind her. Several identical briefcases are already on the shelf. She remarks that she hasn't seen him there before and he replies that it's not his type of crowd. She warns him to be careful so he doesn't wind up getting read.

Peter just looks at her and says, "You should get that." A second later the phone rings. She glances back up at him and he offers, "Old trick," before walking away. Peter bellies up to the bar and the bartender puts a glass of water in front of him.

The scene changes to Astrid and Olivia waiting in the van. Astrid wants to know how Olivia and Peter are doing. Olivia brings up that Peter hasn't been sleeping and then he disappears at strange hours, only to come back with a reasonable explanation. She says, "I just think there's something he's not telling me. I can feel it."

Astrid points out that they both have been through a lot. She says that compared to how Peter withdrew when Etta was taken in the invasion this time he is handling it better. Olivia comments, "I keep telling myself that this time, we're stronger, but I'm - I'm worried that I'm losing him again.
Back at the bar/Observer restaurant, Peter watches as Royce comes in and checks his own briefcase. Peter looks at his watch and starts walking towards the desk clerk. The phone rings and she answers it. From her side of the conversation it sounds like she's talking to her unemployed boyfriend. Peter gestures behind her to the row of briefcases. She turns and grabs one off the shelf. He takes it and gives her a little smile before leaving.

In the parking garage Hastings is showing the team the device they will be using to evaporate the rubble. He admonishes Astrid as she reaches towards the tech, warning her he hasn't even explained the start-up sequence yet. He gives them a rundown on the color sequence as it powers up, cautioning them that due to a design flaw in these particular models the fission core sometimes overheats, indicated by the light turning blue. "Blue means run." He tells them.

Nina and Walter have the following conversation:
Nina: I'm worried about you, Walter. What you said earlier, that Peter would keep you from becoming the man you used to be -- I'm not sure that's enough. I knew the man you were, you and William. You both tested the limits of science, of the universe. You felt that boundless power that comes with omnipotence. You felt what it was like to be God.
Walter: You don't need to remind me, Nina. I was there.
Nina: Then you should know how hard I tried to hold on to William, how much I loved him. But that wasn't enough. I wasn't enough. Because nothing can compare to that feeling, to that kind of power. So he let me go.
Walter: The reason you couldn't hold onto William is because he never loved you. He never loved anyone except himself. I've been fooled by him too many times to think anything else. I know better, and so should you.
Nina: You asked me before if I saw him in you. I just did. The Walter I know would never say anything so cruel. But the Walter who lay on an operating table in William's laboratory, begging to have pieces of his brain removed for fear of what he would become, he would.
Walter: I've come a long way. I love my son, he loves me. That will save me.
Nina: For your sake, I hope that's true.

I felt bad for Nina during this sequence. What Walter said cut her deep.

Olivia comes over to collect Walter so they can be on their way. Nina warns them that the Observers monitor changes in the atmosphere so as they can expect Observers to arrive within minutes after they have used the device.

Nina wishes Walter good luck before he leaves. After he turns around Nina breaks down a little, fighting tears.

Anil is now waiting outside the designated building. His watch reads 6:17. Mueller exits a car and goes into the building. He walks through it until he enters a conference room with two other Observers, one of them being Royce.

Outside, Anil pulls out his comm so he can contact Peter. There is a close up of one of the briefcases in the conference room being opened. There is a booming sound and Anil looks up to see one of the higher story windows being blown out. In the room, the Observers now have chemical burns on their heads and faces. One starts to scream and his face melts. Great effect, nasty as hell, and also a throwback to Hamburg Flight 627 from the pilot.

As people on the street stare up in shock at the building, a still smoking grey fedora tumbles to the sidewalk at their feet.

At the storage area site, Olivia, Astrid and Walter are finishing putting up the parameters of the device Nina gave them. Peter drives up in his stolen car. As he gets out he takes a call on his comm from Anil. Anil informs him that his project was a success and that "this place is crawling with Baldies."

After he hangs up, Olivia asks him what it was that Anil wanted. Peter lies, saying that the call he just took was Anil saying that he got caught up at a checkpoint and that's why he never made it to their meeting spot. He also says that he still isn't sure what Anil called him out there for in the first place. Walter tells them that the Matter Sublimation Device is ready.

Astrid, Peter and Olivia gather around as Walter powers it up. It might be a stretch to equate the pattern here, but as it powers up each bulb turns green than red. So not quite the green, green, green, red sequence, but similar. The blockage in front of the doorway begins to disintegrate until it is gone.

The team enters the storage area and navigates their way down a flight of stairs. Peter opens a panel and checks that it has electricity running to it. Astrid hands Bell's dismembered hand to Walter who palms it in his own and takes it to the hand scanner. He plops it up there, kind of a gross visual, but nothing compared to the Observer face-meltdown, and a few seconds later the doors slide open.

They walk through, seeing all kinds of goodies like severed body parts and even a face in specimen jars. Walter suddenly growls, "Bellie, you monster!" He's found an old David Bowie vinyl among William's files. Walter says, "My Bowie ... he stole it. It's not enough that he institutionalized me, betrayed our friendship, but he pilfered my record collection as well."

Olivia hurries him along and tells him to keep looking. Peter finds a large safe behind a sliding wall. He calls the rest of them over. Walter says he remembers when Bell built the safe, "an extra measure of security to guard the things he valued most." Walter declares that Bellie had a terrible memory and used the same combination for everything. "Too much LSD, I suppose," he tacks on.

Walter steps up and starts to work the combination. He tries one set of numbers and the safe remains locked. Same thing for the second combination he uses. Astrid and Olivia remind him that the Observers are probably on their way and they've already been down there a long time, wanting him to give up if he thinks he can't get it open.

Peter reaches out and puts his hand on Walter's shoulder saying calmly, "Clear your head, Walter. Try to relax. Think about the cylinders. You have all the time in the world." Olivia corrects him, bringing up that the Observers could already be there. Peter continues speaking to Walter, "Take a deep breath, Walter. Focus."

As Walter starts to spin the dial again he whispers to himself, "5 ... 20 ... 10." This time the handle turns and the safe opens. Inside there are no cylinders. Walter is disappointed and angry since he should've known better to even consider trusting something Bell said. There is a round tech-y looking object laying on top of a file in the safe. Olivia picks it up and turns it over in her hand, remarking, "whatever it is, it must have been valuable enough to Bell for him to want to keep it in the safe."

Walter sees something else in the interior of the safe. He removes and looks at it. It's a picture of a much younger, vibrant Nina Sharp, smiling happily towards the camera. A look of understanding passes over Walter's face and he places the photo in the inside pocket of his jacket.

Olivia lets Peter look closer at the device they found in the safe. He holds it and runs his thumb along the surface. It lights up red and a rumbling noise starts to pulse through the lab. Peter says he doesn't know what he did to make the thing come alive.

A few feet away the floor starts to pucker upwards and two cylinders tunnel themselves out from below. They start to leave the building, Peter in the lead with one of the beacons. As he charges out into the light as though he doesn't have a care in the world, Olivia tries to warn him to take some caution. However, there are no Observers around as they emerge.

Peter starts walking away and Olivia asks him where he is going. He comes back over and hands his beacon off to her saying, "I'll take my car. It's logical that we split up." He gets into his vehicle.

Olivia now looks more than worried, she looks angry. Walter tells her that on the way back to Boston there is a stop he wants to make.

The stop he makes is to meet with Nina. He relays that the tech she gave them worked and the cylinder is in their possession. He removes the picture from his coat and hands it over to Nina. They have the following conversation:
Walter: I was wrong. He did love you ... and it wasn't enough.
Nina: No.
Walter: I'm scared, Nina. Every day that goes by, I feel him more and more. I'm losing myself. I'm becoming the man I was. And just like before, everyone that I care about will be driven away and will suffer because of me.
Nina: I --
Walter: I need you to take them out.
Nina: What?
Walter: It's perfectly safe. My intellect may be diminished slightly, but it's the only way to hold onto the man I've become. Please, Nina. You must remove these pieces of my brain.

Elsewhere, Olivia opens a door (to what I think is Etta's apartment) and calls out for Peter. She turns on a light and sees several clear wipe boards set up with writing and pictures all over them.

Peter's voice from behind her says, "They're timelines." He explains that he's been keeping track of Windmark's top lieutenants because they are rarely in the same place at the same time. By mapping out their movements he is able to manipulate events.
I've been saying since Peter put the Observer tech in his head that he's picking up the Observer mannerisms, but a lot of the time I thought I was reading more into it than what was there. There is no reading into it now though, it's distinctly there. His words are clipped and emotionless and he really IS doing the tilts.

He says, "The tech that gave them their advantage over us, I have it now."
Olivia questions, "That thing in their heads -- you implanted one in yourself?" She receives a tiny nod of confirmation.
He says, "I've been following them. They don't know where I am, but I know where they are. Today, yesterday, and the day before that. It gives me enough information to determine their probable futures. Mueller was going to get in a town car and be late to a meeting. Royce would've left. I needed them there at the same time. I made that happen."
"What have you done?" Olivia asks him.
Peter tells her, "I used a toxin from Walter's cold storage. The flesh eating toxin that killed everyone aboard flight Six-Two-Seven. Our first Fringe experience was their last.
Olivia realizes, "That's why you knew they wouldn't be coming for us at the storage site. You knew that they would still be responding to your attack.”
Peter turns back around to face the board. Olivia starts to speak. As she does Peter says in sync with her, "You can't do this. This is ... dangerous." Olivia stops talking and Peter continues, "We are going to avenge Etta. Windmark is next."

Peter turns back to his board and starts writing Windmark's name above his picture. Olivia backs slowly away from him and quietly leaves the room.

In the lab Walter opens a cabinet containing all the clues they have rounded up so far. He touches each one in turn; the cylinder, a rock from the mine, the thought unifier, the radio that is tuned to static.

Next he puts on the Bowie record that Bellie had taken from him. He drops the needle to the vinyl and the very appropriate song "The Man Who Sold The World," starts to play.

Astrid checks on him before she goes to sleep, telling him "We did good today," before kissing him on the cheek and heading off to bed. Walter turns up the volume on the record player. Peter is still writing times on his wall of impending doom.

A camera pans up to show Windmark walking down a hallway and getting on an elevator.
Peter is writing 'Origin Point' under Windmark's picture. Back in the lab Walter settles into a chair as the music still plays. Peter is now writing the word 'Elevator' out. As Windmark stands in the elevator, the doors slide shut in front of him. Walter's still listening to Bowie. Peter reaches up and rubs at the back of his head, he pulls his hand away and there is a tuft of brown hair laying in his palm. Peter curiously head tilts and the screen goes black. Hello Bad Robot.

Oh. I. Love. This. Fucking. Show. I love it, I love it, I love it!

And Josh Jackson, he is bringing it a thousand percent. The way he has been morphing more and more into his Observer side a little each episode is outstanding. I would really like to think that all the little things I wrote off as it just being me overanalyzing were done on purpose. I can't say enough, really. This entire cast has done wondrous things over the years and it just pisses me off there is no Emmy love ever for them.

I thought back to the episode that Peter found the Observer suits and hats in the closet. I was hoping then that it was random placement and didn't mean that Peter was Observer bound. Wishful thinking perhaps.

This business of having Walter and Peter lose their humanity at the same time? Fringe is trying to kill us I think.

Peter revealing what he had done with the Observer tech went over a lot less dramatically than I imagined it would. However, that's fitting seeing as how Observers are not dramatic about anything.

It will be three weeks until the next episode which looks unbelievable. Peter gets to do some more Observer ninja-ing. Olivia sounds like she wants to fight to keep Peter human but the tech is close to becoming permanent. I keep re-watching the preview like it's going to suddenly expand into the whole episode.

What did you think? How are you liking this season? Season 5, Episode 6
'Through the Looking Glass and What Walter Found There'
Original Airdate: Friday November 9, 2012

Well, I didn't get around to doing my full, long-ass recap this week for this episode but I did want to put something up so I thought I'd share some Observations (See what I did there?) I had been discussing with a fellow Fringe fan. (*wink* starg8fans - I'm looking at you!)

I really need to watch this episode again so my initial opinions may change later.

This episode had some really awesome scenes that I loved - the P/O in Etta's apartment, Peter taking on the Observer, the Peter and Walter scene at the end - but overall it didn't have the same impact that the previous two episodes did. Which is okay, because I guess they can't all be knock-your-socks-off episodes.

Going into a bit more detail: The pain that Peter conveyed with the simple sentence of "I just needed to see her," was so heartbreaking. And then when he and Olivia were watching the message how Olivia had tears in her eyes and Peter's lip was quivering slightly just knocked that scene out of the park. What great acting from Anna and Josh. I loved that they had their moment to actually grieve together over the loss of their daughter.

Something about the tone and inflection in his voice when Peter said he got the injury on his neck when they collapsed the core made me rewind that part several times.

When he was telling Olivia that he was fine I was thinking to myself, 'Peter, you are so far from fine it's not even funny.'

The look he had at the end of that scene when he looked at Etta's image and then out over Olivia's head kind of gave me the creepy shivers. Of course, I think that I probably read more into every look and nuance Josh gave Peter in this episode because I was trying to see if his Observer was peeking out.

I did love the scene where Walter was counting off his paces and then he took that step and just disappeared. That was awesome.

The video when he got distracted by the pastries was such a lovely moment for people who have been watching this show all the way through because it was just SO Walter. It looked to me like Peter, Astrid and Olivia all had tiny endearing smiles when he did that.

I did sort of like Walter being assertive and aggressive telling the trapped man that if he wanted to get out then he would show him. I didn't think at the time though it meant that it was Ruthless Walter seeping back in. It was when he made the collateral damage comment I thought, "Uh-oh." Although I have been wondering when Walter's re-implanted brain parts would catch up.

I was a bit disappointed when Peter and Olivia disappeared into the pocket and just left Astrid outside, but I guess she was serving as the lookout, and poor thing got sucker punched for that too.

This is probably soooo random and unconnected but I noticed that Peter was wearing a hoodie under his jacket at the end of the episode before and when he killed the Observer. That made me think back to 'Reciprocity' when he was doing the shapeshifter killings. This episode and the last one made me think about 'Reciprocity' a lot. That's probably because it was that episode that Dark Peter was so prevelant in.

Although, I do remember him wearing a hoodie in the 1st or second season when he hadn't gone dark. (I remember it mostly because I watched the gag reel a bunch of times when Josh's phone rings during the scene and he drop kicks it. I always wondered if that broke his phone.)

Again, I was probably reading into it but I thought Peter had a weird or menacing look when he told Walter, 'You weren't supposed to leave the lab.'

I was distracted by the camera movement in the scene when Walter, Peter and Olivia are talking about whether Cecil was Donald or not. It seemed choppy or something, like the editing was weird. IDK.

It was cool that the doors were marked with the Fringe glyphs ... I wonder what that means?

You could see how Peter settled into his Observer tech when he was fighting the Observer. It was like it suddenly started to make sense to him how to move and fight. When he snapped the Observers neck I actually said, "Ohhhh," out loud. That was brutal. I don't want to see Peter keep killing Observers so nonchalantly, but there is definitely something to this side of Peter that is intriguing.

My friend brought up the parallel between Walter and Peter at the end with both of them slowly changing on the inside and this was my response to that:
God the Peter/Walter scene was so great! I'm so glad you mentioned the parallel there. I thought there was one, but somehow I got to thinking it was Walter going on a mission years ago to try to get the other Peter at all costs and Peter taking on the world to avenge Etta's death. After what you mentioned though I totally see how both Walter and Peter are now becoming more in touch with their ruthless sides.

I had the thought when I was writing this that when Peter called Walter 'Dad,' what if he did that because he thought that was what he was supposed to do? Thinking that was a proper response to a moment like that. Because at first I was all, "Awww, he called him Dad." but what if it meant something completely opposite than what I was thinking? One good thing is there have been times in the past when Peter was not Observerised he referred to Walter as Dad and he meant it in a loving way.

One more of the reading into things: Right before we saw that Peter was seeing in that blue hue it looked like he did an Observer head tilt. (Really though, what makes an Observer head tilt different than a non-Observer head tilt?) Did Peter actually smile back at Olivia when she smiled at him? And did he see something significant during that moment?

So, everybody, what did you think? Leave a comment, question or your own thoughts about this episode. What was your favorite or least favorite moment? I love that, when something happens that I didn't see coming. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

The episode opens with Peter looking at Etta's Fringe Division ID. Then he picks up a little book that also has the Fringe Division symbol on its pages. Etta's picture stares up at him and he runs his thumb across her cheek. Then he turns to where Olivia is sleeping on the bed and holds the picture up, doing what I can only assume is comparing the two. And from our perspective as the viewer the woman in the picture does look almost identical to the one on the bed. Peter places the book into a cardboard box beside him before picking up a hairbrush and passing his thumb across the bristles, just as he did with the picture of his daughter.

He slides open a drawer in the dresser in front of him, squatting down to give the empty space where it came from a closer inspection. One of the panels on the inside of the drawer sways outwards and has a small button in its corner. He presses it and there is a click. A painting on the wall beside him swings away slightly from the wall. He pulls it towards him to reveal a hidden cache of guns and C-4 explosives behind it. "That's my girl," he says with sadness in his voice.

He starts packing the weapons into a duffel bag (reminding me of that black bag he was carrying around in 'Reciprocity', but I guess that could be said for any black duffel bag) and Olivia awakens and sits up behind him. She says every time she wakes up she realizes that what she has been dreaming is not just a nightmare but reality. "Why would we get her back just to lose her again?" Peter doesn't have an answer for her in words so he offers her comfort by touch. He holds her as she rests her forehead on his chest and he kisses her on the top of the head.

I know the circumstances here are terrible, but it's nice to see them touching each other again. I hope that as tragic as Etta's death was that it serves to bring them together and not push them further apart.

In the bathroom, Olivia removes a framed photo of Etta and a brown-haired woman from a shelf. She puts it in a box. I don't know who the woman is.

In Manhattan, New York, the air starts to visibly crackle with blue streaks of energy. The people in the area decide to take cover because even the atmosphere feels off. Several Hummers roll up, with Loyalists and Observers disembarking. Two Loyalists carry a large re-enforced plastic box out into the middle of the street while an Observer makes notations in a journal. The crate is opened and the Observer removes a metal box which he places a few feet from the original container. Over the sound of the wind swirling around there are some beeps and hums heard coming from the device.

The Observer walks away and stands off to the side, joining another one that is waiting. A large black opening appears above the street in front of them. A few seconds pass and then three large white containers float out of it and slam down onto the street with a clang. The hole closes, leaving both sides of the street and the adjacent building scorched as black as it was. (A musical score that reminds me of 'The Imperial March' plays as the boxes come out.)

The original Observer walks over to the first white box and slices into it, creating a flap. (Is Darth Vader going to come out?) He folds it down so he can access what is inside. With a remote-looking device he scans a piece of equipment inside the box. "Integrity is stable. Prepare for transport," he tells Observer Number 2.

Back at the house, Olivia is packing away a few more things. Peter tells Walter that it's time for them to leave. Walter has found a bottle of Etta's perfume, saying he would like to keep it since, "My memory, it fails me, but my sense of smell helps me remember." Peter let's Walter know it's fine for him to hang on to it.

Astrid calls Peter for a video chat. She explains that there is an ambered propane tank and a gallon of Ethanol in close proximity where she needs to retrieve the next tape from and unless they want the whole lab plus Astrid to go 'Boom!' she's going to have to be really careful in the extraction process.

Walter takes the phone from Peter and says, "Abner, why did you leave the propane tank there in the first place?" Abner replies, "Someone wanted to cook Bratwurst." Walter then asks, "Well, why is the Ethanol there and not in the cupboard." The long-suffering (but surprisingly not schizophrenic yet, given all of Walter's names for her) Astrid informs him, "Someone wanted to use the Ethanol to clean the Hibachi before they cooked the Bratwurst." Anybody have any guesses on just who this someone was? Hmm?

I feel like this season Walter has been even more inventive with Astrid's names.

They hear a phone ringing somewhere near them so Walter disconnects with Astrid. Olivia finds Etta's phone in the box of things she had packed and answers it. It's Anil. He wants to meet with them.

Olivia, Peter and Walter meet with Anil on the street where the black hole had opened up. There are posters up on some of the buildings that say, "THE FUTURE IN ORDER" with a picture of an Observer. When Anil arrives he offers his condolences on the loss of Etta, saying "She was special. Not just to me, but to the movement. I hope someday you'll understand how much." Olivia acknowledges his words with a nod.

Walter gestures to the blackened pavement, wanting to know what it is. Anil explains they think that it is a shipping lane the Observers use to bring things through from the future to the now. "A wormhole," Walter says. Anil tells them that before the lane appeared there were reports of unusual static electricity in the air. The Observers are bringing through components to help complete the air-degradation system that is being built in Central Park. There were also reports of the same type of burn marks in Egypt and France as well. Egypt and France are also locations with air-degradation systems.

Anil says that once the machine is finished it will mean that the Observers will have completed their air-quality manipulation on all continents. Peter remarks that they know this means that everyone's life span will be cut down to 45 years because, "Etta told us." At the mention of her daughter's name Olivia looks down quickly.

Anil tells them that based on previous occurrences overseas several more shipments should follow the one that has already arrived. The Resistance would like to destroy the next load when it arrives. He produces a book with Observer language scrawled on it's pages, wanting to know if Olivia could read Observerese because he thinks it's a shipping log book. If so, that would help them figure out when the next shipment is coming so the Resistance can be ready. Olivia lets him know she'll pass the book along to Astrid.

When she questions Anil as to where the book came from Anil makes a phone call, telling the person who answers, "Okay, show them our visitor." The screen on the phone displays an Observer who is strapped to a gurney that can be rotated. Anil says that yesterday while the Observer was in this same area taking measurements he was captured. "Good work," Peter says. Anil tells them that they were unable to get any information from their prisoner.

Peter points to a square of white on the pavement. He says that "whatever happened, it started here. Something incredibly powerful was sitting here." Anil pipes up to let them know that when they picked up the Observer he had tech on him in the shape of a cube. Peter thinks this could be the key to open the door between now and the future. Peter wants to look at the one they have in hopes that it will help them make a larger impact on the Observers plans by decimating their entire shipping lane rather than just one shipment.

Anil, Olivia and Walter all seem to be in agreement that without having more information about the tech they should hold off before doing anything. To Peter, Walter says, "Anil is right. We don't know exactly what we're dealing with here." With finality Peter replies, "I've made up my mind." Walter leaves him be and decides he wants to take some carbon samples.

Peter is squatting, scanning the ground, taking readings when Anil comes up to him and says, "Before you go on a journey of revenge, dig two graves." I guess Anil decided not to sugar-coat it. Peter tells him, "I'm not worried about being destroyed. It's the Observers that should be worried." Peter says they need the cube. Anil makes a phone call to the guy who's babysitting the Observer and tells him to bring it.

In the lab Peter now has the cube with it's pieces disassembled. He is gingerly fitting different sections into the cube itself. He pushes two parts together on the table in front of him. As soon as they touch he jumps and pulls his hand away like it shocked or burned him. He uses his shirt sleeve as a buffer and pulls the part he just inserted in the cube back out.

Astrid and Olivia are sitting in front of a computer using a program trying to decipher the language in the Observer's book. Astrid glances over at Olivia to see her just staring off into space. When Olivia realizes that Astrid is looking at her she looks down. Astrid offers to work on cracking the code alone, telling Olivia, "It's understandable if you are overwhelmed. I mean, you're in shock." (I love Astrid, she's just great. She's the kind of person you would want to be friends with in real life.) Olivia declines, saying it's better if she concentrates on this.

Astrid figures out that they may be going about this the wrong way because the computer program she is running is looking for a one to one correlation in the Observer language, whereas it is a good possibility that an Observer symbol could have many different meanings, not just one letter. Since this opens up who-knows-how many what ifs Astrid says she needs more computing power. Olivia calls Anil.

Walter comes over to consult with Peter on what he's found out about the cube. Turns out it's not much. The only things Peter can really tell Walter is that it's made up of a strange alloy with no magnetic properties and that even without being on, it already has a large amount of energy coming off of it.

Walter has come up with a plan, (Albeit an extremely dangerous one - I mean, really, what Walter-plan isn’t? ), to annihilate the wormhole that the Observers are using. Using army men, a toy car, a sheet and marbles he demonstrates his idea. Basically, if they are able to collapse the wormhole on this end's side then when the shipment from the future comes through it wouldn't have anywhere to go, causing the hole itself to bog down, which in turn would create a vacuum effect, consuming the energy and matter around it by sucking it down. Peter double checks, "You want to turn the wormhole into a black hole." Walter confirms this and Peter says, "Excellent, Walter," as he pats him on the shoulder.

They are going to need an anti-matter device to throw into the open shipping corridor to blow it up. Luckily, they have some they took from Etta's apartment. Olivia raises the logical point that with Observers and armed Loyalists around they are not going to just be able to walk up and chuck it in like they would a penny in a wishing well. Walter says that by figuring out how to use the cube they will be able to be the ones to open the lane instead of the Observers. They just have to know when and where to be so the two time periods can connect. Hopefully they'll be able to figure that out with the shipping log.

They also still don't know how the cube works so Peter decides he's going to give talking to the Observer his version of the old college try since Anil was unsuccessful. Remember now, that Peter falsified his degree to M.I.T. so his version of so-called college try could have a very different definition than one may think. He confirms this by saying, "Anil has his way of doing things and I have mine." Olivia does not look very excited by this idea.

As Peter is packing up to leave Olivia tries to talk him out of going, but without really saying that. She mentions they will have time to devise something else and that Walter has his plan. Peter is determined to make the most of the opportunity they have at the moment. Peter says if they accomplish this they will have a real victory because so far, what they have is "pieces we don't know how to put together, a scroll with physics we can't decipher, a thought unifier that doesn't work and a box of rocks from a mine. That's what our daughter died for so far."

Olivia agrees that she does want some kind of actual win against the Observers. She's still hesitant though, and finally admits that she's worried about Peter and afraid. Peter assures her, "Nothing's gonna happen to me. I can do this. We can do this. Our daughter dedicated her life to freeing us and now we're gonna dedicate ours to making sure that that means something. When we win, when we beat them, I want everyone to know that Etta is responsible for the world being saved." Olivia says, "I want that too." Peter affirms, "Then we have to do this. And we can, Olivia. Together." By the time he finishes speaking he is cupping her face in his hands. Walter was just around the corner and has heard most of this conversation between Peter and Olivia.

This part brought back many reminders of previous times in the show where they had to work together, which in a way is always the case, but the times in particular I'm thinking of are: 6B (That's mostly because of Olivia saying, “I want that too” reminded me of the Mrs. Merchant conversation and "I want what you want."), when they had to work together before Peter got in the machine, and Season 4's finale when they were jumping onto the boat. I hope them being back on the same page, even in small ways like agreeing on things like this will help to heal the rift between them.

Peter removes the grate from the wall and gets ready to leave saying, "Wish me luck," to Olivia. She just smiles weakly.

Peter and Anil arrive at the hide-out where the Observer is being held. He's hooked up to an I.V. that Anil explains contains chemicals that are like natural anti-freeze which keeps the Observers from phasing to another location. Anil tells Peter that the Observers seemingly super-human abilities are actually being aided by tech. Anil shines an ultra-violet light over a spot on the back of the Observers neck and a dot gleams where the tech is located. Peter touches the spot and says, "Well, hello there."

Anil adjusts the concoction that is being given to the Observer so he will come to. To help him wake up just a little more, Anil gives him a smack across the face. Anil introduces Peter as, "his friend." Adding "he's meaner than I am, so I guess you know where that leaves you."

Anil leaves and Peter removes the cube from it's case. He tells the Observer, "You recognize this, right? You're gonna help me put it together." Peter says in order to find out more about the device he needs to know how to turn it on. The Observer remains steadfast, remarking that so far he hasn't given any information to his captors. He reads Peter, saying, "You believe you are more capable of success where others have failed." The Observer continues to read Peter and at first I thought he was probably getting dark, torturous thoughts from Peter's brain, but maybe it could also be the plan, because Peter tells him it doesn't matter what he finds out, since he won't be leaving there alive. Peter says "Whatever the closest thing it is to fear that you can feel, I know that you're feeling it right now. You're not the only one with the skill for reading people." In classic Observer double-speak the Observer answers, "You don't even know what you don't know." After all that I don't think I even know what I know, let alone what I don't. There was a lot of I know you know that I know that you know going on there.

During the set of commercials that run during this break there is a commercial with an Observer who tells us, "Your loyalty is not expected, it is required. Report any occurrences of technology infiltration to Reward Wire immediately." While a website flashes on the bottom www.rewardwire.org. I'll leave it up to you if you want to go check out what it is. For a half second during the commercial "Keep Watching Fringe" flashes across the screen, like a subliminal message.

When the show comes back Peter has a small camera focused on the Observers right eye. The camera is feeding video to a screen Peter has sitting on a table with the cube and its parts around it. Peter wants to know what is the right order to put the cube together to make it activate an electric current.

Peter sits at the table with one piece of the tech in each hand, he holds them up but the Observer doesn't say anything. Peter fits them into the top of the cube. The Observer says, "You are pleased with yourself." Peter replies, "I'm feeling optimistic, if that's what you mean." Peter fits another piece in and electricity crackles as it slides home. As Peter continues to plug components into the cube the Observer starts talking, comparing humans to ants that the Observers don't care about. They don't care whether or why the humans want to kill one another, it is all insignificant to the Observers. He says just like ants humans are oblivious to their limitations. He finishes with, "You think the black over your head is dark skies, when it is really our shoe."

Peter quips, "You talk a good game, but the truth is, you're worried." He fits a sphere-shaped piece into a spot and the device lights up and starts to hum.

At the lab Olivia has Etta's necklace out and is running it through her fingers. Walter comes in with a video tape in his hand. Olivia, thinking it is the one from the amber, is surprised how quickly they were able to recover it. Walter lets her know it's actually something he found in his office, it's a recording of one of Etta's birthdays. Walter thinks that it's important for Olivia and Peter to watch the tape. Olivia looks perturbed and puts some distance between her and Walter, and leans on the table. She says, "Walter, I am holding on by a thread. You do understand that?"

Walter confesses that he heard the conversation between her and Peter before Peter left. Walter says he knows that even though yes, Olivia is afraid for Peter's well-being, it runs deeper than that. Walter thinks they should watch this to see a time when they were happy and affectionate with each other to make them realize that it's still there, they just have to hold on to it. Then he says, "You must face this pain together. The pain is her legacy to you both. It's proof that she was here. And I have experience with this - this sort of pain, and you can't escape it by building walls around your heart or by breaking the universe, or by vengeance. You lost each other once, but you have another chance." Even after Walter's plea Olivia tells him she can't watch it.

I thought this was a very moving scene between Olivia and Walter because I've been thinking that Walter knows what they are going through since he lost Peter (both of them actually).

Astrid comes in and by seeing the seriousness hanging off Walter and Olivia she knows something's up. She apologizes and Olivia tells her it's alright. Good tidings Astrid brings because her and Anil have cracked the Observer code. The book they have is indeed a shipping manifest and according to it the next one is due to arrive that very afternoon.

Olivia and Astrid leave the immediate area and Walter gently places the tape on the table top.

Back to Peter and the Observer -- Peter has another piece in his hand that if it goes in wrong will cause them to go 'Ka-Blooey'. The Observer says he really doesn't care what happens, if he dies - so be it. Peter explains that since his origins are human there is a part of him that will want to stay alive. Even if the Observer doesn't consciously care his body itself will give Peter the clues he needs to put the part in correctly. Peter carefully watches his eye as he starts to fit the object in one way. He reveals that with good news someone's pupil will dilate, for bad it will contract. He positions the piece one way and the Observer's pupil gets smaller. Peter turns it a quarter turn and this time the Observer's pupil expands slightly. That being the confirmation Peter was looking for, he slides the piece in.

His phone rings. It's Olivia calling to tell him that a new shipment is coming in around a half hour and wants to know if he'll be good-to-go. As she talks Peter readies another piece and lowers it into the cube. The Observer's pupil widens minutely. Olivia is still waiting on an answer from him and he turns a dial on the top of the machine. A light blinks green, green, green, red (The pattern!!!) and Peter tells Olivia, "I'm on my way."

The scene changes to a shot of a street. Blue electricity crackles in the air. Anil jogs out with the case and opens it up. On the other side of the road two Observers also bring out a case. Peter watches from a window as Anil activates the device. Peter cocks a large gun and Olivia tosses him an anti-matter bomb. (Shouldn't they be a little more careful with those things?) The Observers get ready to insert the activation piece into their cube. Before they do that there are some flashes of light and energy begins to gather. They realize something weird is going on. Peter has his gun at the ready, waiting for the portal to open.

In the building that Peter and Olivia are in Peter turns to look over his shoulder to find an Observer has phased in behind him. He turns towards him and the Observer lands a kick to his midsection that sends him flying across the room. Olivia brings her gun up but before she can do anything the Observer is there and hits her across the face. The Observer continues to beat the shit out of Peter, foiling every attempt Peter makes to fight back. Outside, the portal has opened and the large white containers are starting to float out.

Peter's flat on his back and the Observer walks over. He stands by his head and raises his black-shoe clad foot until the shadow of it falls over Peter's face. (Callback to the ant comparison the other Observer was talking about.)

There is a click and the Observer turns to find Olivia leveling her gun at him. "Yeah, it is that type of gun," Olivia says to his unspoken question and fires. The Observer tries to catch the bullet but it slips through his fingers and embeds itself in his chest.

He goes down and Peter gets up. He grabs his gun and launches the anti-matter canister into the open portal. Wind begins to rush around and the boxes that had migrated out of the portal now start to go back in. A car, a bicycle and lots of trash also go in. The portal closes The Observers just look on as they usually do, but the Loyalists look a bit scared.

Olivia and Peter meet Anil back at the van and they speed off. They are all happy until Anil looks in the mirror and his face falls. They stop the van and get out. At the end of the alleyway they are in they can see that another wormhole has opened and the white containers are being fed out of them again. Olivia says, "I mean, we destroyed it. We created a black hole. How could they recover so quickly?" Peter just looks unhappy.

The gang calls Walter who doesn't understand why it didn't work. As he and Olivia talk, Peter turns and walks determinedly off. Olivia calls after him wanting to know where he is going. "To get answers," he replies. Olivia gets off the phone with Walter and follows him. She calls out for him and looks around but she doesn't see him. As she turns her gaze falls upon a poster on the side of a building. It's a huge poster of Etta with the word 'Resist' written vertically down the side. As she glances down the alley she sees duplicates of the poster every few feet, effectively plastering Etta all down the alleyway.

Peter goes to the warehouse where the Observer is being held. As he walks past the guy watching the Observer he says, "You can leave, I'll take it from here." He rips some plastic sheeting down from where it is hanging from the ceiling and stalks toward the Observer. He puts it over the Observer's head and starts suffocating him. (Ugh. I hate these kinds of death scenes.) The camera pans in a circle around Peter while he chokes the Observer. Right when the Observer can't hold on any longer Peter rips the plastic away from his face.

"Why didn't it work?" He practically growls. Man, does he look pissed. To sum up what the Observer tells him: The dilated pupil response that Peter based his final decision on was not because the Observer was subconsciously agreeing that it was the correct fit. It was because the Observer saw a fly across the room. When his brain took note of it there was a small irregularity in his heartbeat. That caused the flow of oxygen to his brain to be ever so slightly altered which affected his ocular motor nerve. That is what caused his pupil to dilate. He declares, "That's what you picked up on. My observation of a fly."

He goes on to say that because humans are driven by their emotions they often see what they want to see. He claims Peter was able to put together the device because of his skill, he only used his readings of the Observer to bolster his confidence about doing it correctly.

Then the Observer peeks into Peter's brain to see that he blames them for Etta's death. He basically tells Peter that Etta's death didn't matter, which of course throws Peter into more of a rage than he already was. He pistol whips the Observer, opening up a gash on his cheek. Now read this next part carefully. Peter says, "You are nothing but tech. I would be ten times what you are if I had that tech in my head." Peter stares down the Observer who is doing a head tilt at him. Peter pummels the Observer again and the screen goes black.

Okay, are you thinking what I'm thinking? He's not really going to do that is he? Well, read on friends.

The next scene shows Olivia lying down staring off. She looks over and sees the video. She sits up and slowly walks over, taking it out of it's cover. She pops it in the VCR.

The scene changes again to show black boots walking across the floor. We are back with Peter and the Observer. Peter is picking through a tray of medical tools. He selects a scalpel and small forceps. The Observer is now upside down, still strapped to his gurney. Peter holds the instruments in his line of sight and says, "You're wrong about emotions not being real. My feelings for her are very real."

He moves around beside the Observer. Leaning over him, he uses the scalpel to make an incision in the back of his neck. The Observer starts to shake and grunt. "Can you feel that?" Peter asks, his voice deadly calm. "The pain of a piece of you being torn out? That's the pain a father feels when he loses a child." (He was a little less calm on that last sentence.) The Observer stops shuddering and sags forward against his restraints. Blood trickles down his collar. Behind him Peter is holding an approximately three inch metal rod that has what looks like a tiny antenna attached to it between his forceps.

Olivia is now seated in front of the television watching the video. Peter, Olivia and Etta are happily celebrating her birthday, giggling and talking about cake. Etta tells Peter at one point to "Kiss Mommy." Peter obliges, asking her "Good, Your Highness?" Olivia reaches out and caresses the screen and tears roll down her face.

Now we are back with the Observer and Peter. The Observer is still dead, still upside down and is accumulating a puddle of blood beneath him on the floor. There's is sad, verging on eerie music playing during this scene. Bloody footprints lead away from the Observer.

We find Peter standing shirtless in front of a mirror with a scalpel in his hand and poised at the back of his neck. He takes a deep breath and makes the incision. He puts down the scalpel and picks up the tech he removed from the Observer. He is shaking and grunting from the pain, but he takes another deep breath and steadies himself. He brings the tech around to the point on his neck where he cut himself. When he gets close it jumps out of his hand and ironically enough appears to enter his body right above the point where he cut his opening. That kinda sucks. He could've saved himself from self-operation.

Now he's shaking, grunting and holding his head. I'm afraid he's either going to have an aneurysm or turn into a werewolf. Then his phone rings, he digs it out of his pocket and actually manages to sound halfway normal when he answers. Because it is an important conversation here it is:
Peter: Hi.
Olivia: Peter. [crying] Peter, I want you to come home. I don't wanna lose you.
Peter: It's okay, Olivia.
Olivia: Etta would want us to be together, you know? She would want us to survive this. I just -- I love you.
Peter: I love you too.

The pain comes on again and he lowers the phone. The entire time he's been staring himself down in mirror but he seems to take it to a whole new level here, reminding me of 'Reciprocity' at the end when he was doing the same thing. Which is fitting seeing as how he went all DarkPeter in this episode.

That’s it folks. We gotta wait til next week for more.

The Peter/Olivia conversation written out does nothing for it. Do yourself a favor, watch it. Wow. So emotional..

So here's my random stuff.

I had a brief moment during this episode of "What if people from the Other Side came over to help defeat the Observers?" I know that's (probably) not going to happen. I wonder what's going on Over There. Did the same thing happen? They were already pretty bad off before but they were supposed to be getting a little better.

Where is September? Did he die? Will we find out? And along those lines, how about Nina?

When Walter told Olivia, "I see what you see," was he referring to Peter going all BAMF (more than usual)? I just remembered that this Walter was not the same one who witnessed Peter slicing into the Shapeshifter in season 3.

Was the captured Observer just telling Peter that story behind his pupil response so Peter wouldn't know the truth? I actually lean towards no on that one.

At first I was of the opinion that Peter killing the Observer was more brutal than when he killed the Shapeshifter in 'Reciprocity' but now that I've sat here and thought about it for a bit I don't think that anymore. They both were brutal in their own ways. Peter got a pass on the Shapeshifter killing to me because the Shifter was threatening him. This time, well, hold on I'm changing my mind again. This time, I understand why he did it, but on some levels it's harder to rectify morally because the Observer wasn't attacking him at the moment and he was strapped down.

Did Peter stop to consider that putting that tech in his head might just make him drop fucking dead right on the spot?

If Olivia had called ten minutes earlier would Peter not be part Observer now? I am so glad that they have now at least said they loved each other, to each other. But what's coming next? Is Peter going to go all heartless Observer and not be emotional? Is he going to tell Olivia and the rest of the gang?

So many questions. What did you think? What was your favorite part or least favorite part? If you think you have answers to any of my random questions, let me know!

If this blog will not let you comment and you would like to share your thoughts you can email ThoughtProvokingShirts@gmail.com

Thanks for reading.

Season 5 Episode 4 ... "The Bullet That Saved The World"
Original Airdate - Friday October 26, 2012

I have been seriously slacking on the Season 5 recaps, that is to say if ‘seriously slacking’ means not doing them at all. Tonight's episode though, was just the kick in the ass I needed to get writing again.

It starts with Peter siphoning gas from a car at night. A small fire burns in a trash can in the background behind him. He glances cautiously around while he waits for the gas can to fill. Once he is finished he stops outside a store that has a toy monkey in the window banging cymbals. The corners of his mouth upturn very slightly as he looks at it.

He takes the gasoline into the store with him and makes a bit of small talk with the shop keeper who has a Rastafarian accent. There is a throw pillow there that is embroidered with the phrase: "If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plan." The shop keeper remarks that it's been there for awhile and perhaps it "hits too close to home."

Peter finds a Simon game and reminisces briefly about how he had one when he was a kid. Peter declines the offer from the clerk who says "I'll give you a good deal, man." Peter steps forward to the counter and says, "Actually, what I'm looking for is a --"

A voice behind him says, "This is what you were looking for." It's an Observer holding out a silver chain, telling Peter that it would look good on the young blond women that he is thinking of.

Peter has his back to the Observer and closes his eyes for a moment as though he is concentrating. The Observer attempts to read his thoughts but they are a jumble of overlapping nonsensical mutterings. The Observer catches "Red Sox" out of the muddled musings and asks Peter what baseball is.

Peter explains that at one time, before you bald assholes came and started polluting everything worse than it already was and melting peoples minds, it was a sport. Well, except he didn't really say the part about bald assholes and the polluting and the melting, but yeah, he wanted to. I could tell.

While Peter is trying to pay for his purchase and get the hell out of there the Observer concludes that he is upsetting Peter because he doesn't like being read. Peter says, "Who's upset? I got nothing to hide. What's there to be upset about?"

Peter hands the clerk a bill of some denomination that I can't tell and wants to know if that will cover his purchase. The Rastafarian says, "Blood clot, man. I haven't seen one of these in years." That's what my closed captioning says anyway. I personally don't think he says 'Blood clot' and I can't tell what it is.

As the Observer begins to catch on that Peter is purposefully trying to trip him up mentally Peter drops the chain over his own head and walks out of the shop, telling the store clerk to "Keep the change."

Once he gets outside there is a group of Loyalists giving some Natives a hard time for being out so late. The Observer exits the shop behind Peter, telling them "There is something wrong. Detain him." Old tattle-tale gets a gas can to the chin from Peter for his snitchiness and Peter takes off running.

He disappears around a corner and the Loyalists follow until they come upon an open man-hole cover with a ladder extending downward. They conclude that Peter must be down there. In the sewer Peter cocks his gun in preparation for them. There is a clanking noise and a small cylindrical object rolls up beside him. It is beeping and has blinking red lights. Peter takes off running again. Behind him there is an explosion that catapults him off his feet.

This terrifying moment is apparently just the right time for the credits.

Peter slowly comes to and finds that he is laying on the ground with a kid playing a harmonica looking down at him. (For those of you that saw the previews of this scene and thought Peter looked D-E-A-D it was all for buildup purposes. Fringe is really good at that, aren't they?)

Pretty much all the kid wants to know is if the gun Peter has is real. After informing Peter that he came out of a nearby storm drain and that he is bleeding, the boy calmly saunters off, playing his harmonica again.

There are Loyalists stationed outside of what is Formerly Harvard University. They are oblivious that Walter and Astrid are hard at work inside, lasering another tape from the ambered mess that is now the lab.

Astrid carefully pulls it from the amber, and lets Olivia know that the condition of this one might be better. Walter complains in the background, "It took hours . . . at this rate we will save the world. In another 21 years ... and you know how old that will make me. I don't even want to do that math."

Peter enters the lab and Olivia is concerned by his appearance since half his face is bruised and bloodied. He tells Olivia and Etta about his ordeal with the Observer and that an image was extracted from him. It was Etta. Peter dejectedly says, "I don't know how we're going to beat 'em."

Etta assures her father that "We beat them one by one." She says in time she can teach all of them how to have a series of planned thoughts in their head so they cannot be read.

Peter hands over the necklace he got for her as, "payment on the first lesson." Etta thankfully hugs him and he says, "worth every bump and bruise, kiddo." (Awwww.) Afterwards he shares a look and smile with Walter that I took as them bonding over fatherhood.

Back at the store a different Observer is playing the Simon game. The door swings open (The name of the shop is Thrifty Lion, by the way.) and Broyles enters. He looks a little older, a little rougher around the edges, but still unmistakably Broyles. The Observer, who I believe is Windmark, gives Broyles the stare-down as Simon still beeps away. Then Broyles asks, "You wanted to see me?"

Windmark (if I'm wrong someone can let me know) shows Broyles a hologram of Peter's sketchy reading earlier. Windmark shows Broyles the necklace and says, "This is what he purchased. An alloy of gold and other metals. Minerals Argentine and Chlorargyrite. What is its purpose?" Broyles explains it is something that you wear.

Windmark thinks that there is a leak in Broyles' team. One of the men on it did not pass a security test. Broyles says he will check it out and then leaves.

Back at the lab they are watching the tape they un-ambered, 'Tape Two.' The video-Walter unfurls a large sheet of paper that he says contains plans that must be followed to the letter. He rolls them up and inserts them into a tube to protect the document. The tape is garbled on and off and taped-Walter says that "I have hidden them as I would my most prized possession." Then he starts to tell a story about being a boy and going with his mother on what she deemed, "Manhattan Mystery Tours." Olivia palms her forehead in frustration and the tape starts to get choppier until the VCR finally ejects it.

However, video-Walter provided enough clues to tip present day (well, 2036) Walter off to the tube's whereabouts. Walter says it is in the wall of the subway platform beneath Newark Penn Station. He explains that as a 10-year old who had been afraid that the "Pinkos" were about to attack an underground subway seemed to be the safest place for his most prized possession.

Etta informs them that every major way into Manhattan, including train stations are being patrolled by Observers. They decide they are going to have to distract the guards in order to get past them.

Walter says he needs to get into the amber to the rolling cabinet. When Astrid tells him "there's nothing in there except lab equipment and your Easy Bake Oven," Walter isn't concerned about the contents of the cabinet. He needs to get to what's under it. He calls out, "Astrif, (not a typo) prepare the laser!"

In what seems like an incredibly short amount of time they have lasered out a hatch in the floor. Walter passes around Mentholatum for them to sniff before descending the stairs. Below they find what Walter calls his "cold storage of all the Fringe events we've ever encountered." There are several recognizable horrors of the past, including the Porcupine-man. Walter declares, "There was a time when we solved Fringe cases. Now I think it's time we created a few of our own."

I laughed when Olivia said to Astrid, "You really had no idea that he was doing any of this?" Astrid's reply was, "I wouldn't have slept at night if I did." Walter has a slight freak out when he turns and finds that Etta has an Ambering device in her hands. "Put that down. You'll Amber us. It's an Ambering device. Put it down, gently. Hair trigger."

Etta dutifully and carefully returns the Ambering device to whence it came. Walter breathes a sigh of relief.

Side note: I think in this scene Peter is wearing his wedding ring on a chain around his neck.

When Walter's flashlight beam alights on the broken window to the Other Side, Peter quickly says, "There has got to be a better option for getting us into that train station than a portal that lets us see into another universe." Walter reluctantly agrees.

While he is searching for a Fringe event for them to use he comes across what he calls a doughnut hole. Okay, this thing is pink, it has tendrils coming off the sides of it and it looks goopy. OMG. So of course what does Walter do? He announces that it's a jelly doughnut hole, it's still spongy and THEN he swipes a bit of it up with his finger and tastes it. "It's still good," he concludes. I got a little gaggy at that scene and that says a lot considering the stuff that's seen on this show.

Elsewhere an Observer is showing the Loyalist that failed his security test the recording of his earlier interrogation. Broyles watches from his office on a screen almost as big as he is.

The recording shows the Observer asking the man several questions to ascertain if he is actually who he says he is. The Observer wants to know when he was inducted into the academy, if he thought of his deceased parents during the ceremony and lastly, what was the weather like that day .

The answers the Loyalist provides are: April 25, 2033, he missed his parents being there to see him be inducted and that it was sunny on that day.

That's a big oops. The Observer says, "On April 25, 2033 in Boston, rainfall began approximately at 10:20 a.m. and continued steadily until late in the evening." The Observer begins to read the guy and concludes that the paperwork to get him into the position he is occupying was forged. He continues to probe his gray matter.

Broyles watches intently from his office. The veins start to bulge out in the man's forehead as the Observer continues to dig. A trickle of blood dribbles out of his nostril. The Observer thinks that this man must know something about the fugitives, most pointedly where Peter Bishop is hiding.

He manages to drag a memory out of the dude's brain of him overhearing Anil saying something. Then the Observer stumbles upon something else that intrigues him. It is the name "The Dove." The man he is reading starts to shake. In his office, Broyles stands up from where he had been leaning against his desk.

After pushing the Loyalist to the edge of a breakdown the Observer gives up on finding out from him who this "Dove" really is. The Observer turns and looks directly at the camera that is feeding the footage to Broyles in the office.

Broyles unsheathes his weapon and checks that it has bullets? Is powered up? Makes sure it's ready, whatever it is that entails it's good-to-go.

About the time the Observer was talking about forged documents I started hoping that Broyles was in on this and he was part of the Resistance. His actions could be taken either way, but I was hoping he was powering up his gun in case he had to pop an Observer.

The interrogator comes in and when he turns his back to close the door Broyles' hand hovers over his weapon. The Observer says he was unable to get a full picture out of the Loyalist, only bits and pieces. Broyles brings up that this is the third time there has been a mention of someone or thing called "The Dove."

The Observer says that upon hearing the name Peter Bishop the Loyalist remembered overhearing Anil talk about a lab in Sector B.
(Damn it. Now they are going to know where they are.)

The Observer brings up Broyles having a relationship with the fugitives in the past. Broyles seems surprised that the Observer knows he used to work with Peter and the gang. Broyles admits, "I knew them, but that was a long time ago."

The Observer keeps looking at Broyles like he is trying to read him but Broyles is suffering no adverse effects. Based on what the Observer has found out he thinks that the fugitives are in the lab. He tells Broyles, "I will make my report," and leaves. Once the door closes Broyles sighs a little and looks down.

Yes, Yes, Yes and more Yes!!! I so want Broyles to be a part of the Resistance.

In the lab it's almost like old times. Some music is playing in the background. Astrid is elbow deep in protective gloves as she works on something in a plexi-glass container. Walter and Peter are behind a table working on a task. Walter brings a grenade launcher looking device up to his shoulder and says, "Pull." He fires a shot that dings off of one of the overhead lights, startling Astrid. She turns around to admonish him. Peter's face instantly goes from laughing at Walter to a "It wasn't me" look as he points at Walter.

Astrid says, "Walter, technically this is a weapon of mass destruction." Walter chortles, "So is a mosquito if it carries the West Nile." I love Walter. He decides his current shooting apparatus will work well for what he has in mind.

In another part of the lab Olivia and Etta are discussing the number of people guarding the subway station. When Olivia sees Etta restringing the mashed up bullet onto the chain Peter gave her the conversation changes.

Etta had found a matchbox in Olivia's jewelry box that contained the bullet. In an effort to feel closer to her estranged mother she began wearing it around her neck. She knew that for Olivia to have kept it, it must have held some significance.

Olivia takes it from Etta. (Looking surprisingly cheerful to be handling the bullet that was once embedded in her brain.) As she turns it over in her hands she says, "You know, your father used to call this 'The bullet that saved the world.'"

Their bonding moment is interrupted by a text Etta receives. After she reads it she tells Olivia, "Lab's been compromised."

The scene changes to show Broyles walking out of his office with his phone in his hand. He tucks it into the inner pocket of his suit jacket and joins an Observer who is waiting for the elevator. The elevator arrives, they both get in and the doors slide shut.

Olivia and Etta rejoin Walter, Peter and Astrid, telling them they have to get going because their location has been discovered. Walter says, "We cannot leave the lab. Without the tapes, we have nothing. Forget the blue prints, forget the rocks from the mine, forget whatever is in the tube. None of it means anything without the plan. There goes the world. World ending."

Outside Loyalists are already breaking through the chains that have the doors locked down.

Olivia gets an idea. She says, "Walter, we need to re-amber the lab."

The Loyalists get through the first set of doors. Windmark is watching their progress from his office. Once the Loyalists are inside they look around and report back that they are finding nothing. All that's there is an ambered lab. Broyles is watching as well but his face gives nothing away when he hears this news.

The Loyalists file down the corridor confirming on their Walkie-Talkies that the building is secure. Once they are down the hall a grate pops off the wall and Astrid climbs out from behind it.

Windmark is now convinced that the Loyalist that tipped them off about the lab was wrong. To Broyles, he hypothesizes that if Etta could escape their wicked mind reading maybe other people can as well.

Walter pulls up to the checkpoint in the old station wagon. He asks for directions to Kennebunkport, Maine. He claims he's been driving around in circles and he is lost. A Loyalist scans a red light across his face and asks Walter if he has his travel authorization. The Observer that is also stationed at the checkpoint comes up saying, "I will handle this." He reaches into the car and lays his hand upon Walter's shoulder.

Walter's face freezes and a crackly sound is heard. Electricity races through Walter's body. The Observer removes his hand and Walter smiles, "You electrocuted me," he says nonchalantly as smoke curls off of him. The Observer demands his authorization again. Pronto. Walter rummages around in the passenger seat for a moment.

When he turns back towards the open window he has a gas mask over his face and he discharges a spray directly at the Observer and Loyalist. They both fall to the ground struggling for breath as skin begins to grow over their mouths, noses and eyes, sealing shut their airway. This ranked up there on the high end of freakier-than-usual former Fringe events that they could've chosen to use. It is gruesome, but effective. The device that the Loyalist scanned Walter with has now returned with information to advise Walter is 'Wanted'.

Walter jumps out of the car with Peter behind him. Peter and Walter go towards the station and Olivia takes the wheel of the car so she and Etta can meet them a little later in the back. How Peter, Olivia and Etta were all hiding in the station wagon without being seen, I don't know.

Peter and Walter go down into the belly of the subway station. Walter looks around with his flashlight, finding a wall with the graffiti "Kilroy was here" and a little man drawn on it. (I'm sure there is something significant about that, I might look it up later.) Walter says he drew the picture and what they are looking for must be in the vent.

Peter gets the grating off the wall and reaches inside the opening. He pulls out the tube that was on the video.

Olivia and Etta are waiting in the car. There are some sirens in the background. Olivia turns to Etta and says, "Let's go."

In the subway a Loyalist comes upon Walter and Peter. Peter is able to shoot him and they run away.

Outside a car full of Loyalists has spotted Olivia and Etta. They begin to shoot at them. Olivia and Etta return fire in the form of the suffocating grenades. The Loyalists are soon engulfed by a white mist that is mutating their skin.

Walter and Peter come crashing out of the building, with gas masks on. They jump into the vehicle with Olivia and Etta and careen away. The Loyalists lay convulsing on the ground as they begin dying.

In his office Broyles puts away his laptop (which is oddly clunky looking to be so far in the future). He has a folded piece of paper in his hands. He opens it to show it is a picture of Peter and Olivia. They both look happy and relaxed.

The gang has now parked under an overpass and have spread out the paper that was in the tube on the hood of the car. It is covered with writing. Even though it is in Walter's handwriting he does not recognize what it is. He says, "It's Greek to me. Except that I read Greek. This is Aramaic to me. Not the Western Dialect, I do speak a little."

Etta says they can't go back to the lab yet because there is someone who want to see them. (Fingers crossed, let it be Broyles, let it be Broyles.) A car pulls up and (Whoo-hoo!) Broyles gets out. The former Fringe team stares at him for a moment and then they walk over. Broyles addresses Olivia, "Agent Dunham." She smiles and says, "Phillip," giving him a big hug. I loved this scene. It was like a homecoming, without the home. He greets Walter and Peter before explaining that he didn't want Etta to tell them about him to avoid the Observers reading it out of them.

Five years ago was when Broyles first met Etta. It was at a crime scene and Etta reminded Broyles of Olivia. After finding out who Broyles was Etta admitted that she was indeed Olivia's daughter. Broyles then got Etta to come work for him.

After that Etta talked to Broyles about the Resistance and he joined up. She also taught him how to block the reading techniques of the Observers. Peter wants to know how long it took to master that trick. Broyles explains it was about a year.

Windmark and a Loyalist guard are walking in the abandoned subway station as the Loyalist informs Windmark that the toxin that was used on the others generated scar tissue over their bodies. "Barbaric," says Windmark. (Right, like traipsing around in someone's brain until they hemorrhage isn't.)

They find the opening in the wall where the tube was being hidden. They are unable to figure out what was in there though. Another Loyalist comes up to Windmark handing him a device that is emitting a steady beep. He says, "One of our men died holding this. I think we're gonna be able to find them."

Broyles has his trunk open and is giving out weapons. HK pistols with rechargeable power cells, pulse rifles, motion sensors and scent cones. There's also anti-matter batons. Broyles advises them that the blast radius on them is 100 meters and once they are activated there is no deactivating it.

As Broyles shuts the trunk and is making a joke to Olivia about missing Boston, she takes a step to the side and there is an Observer standing behind her. Broyles holds up his hand saying, "It's all right, I've apprehended them." He pulls his weapon out but swings it towards the Observer and fires. The Observer goes down.

They figure out that there is a tracker on the station wagon, placed there by one of the Loyalists at the last checkpoint. Broyles tells them to get out of there. Etta gives him the tube with the as yet unknown information and says, "Protect the plan. At all costs."

Another Observer materializes out of thin air and zaps Peter. He is only stunned for a second before Etta takes care of the Baldy and they scamper off with Broyles driving off in the opposite direction. Then the air shimmers a moment and Windmark and another Observer materialize and look at the abandoned car. Windmark raises his arm and extends his forefinger. A drop of liquid looks like it falls off his finger. I'm not sure what the significance of that was.

Peter, Olivia, Walter and Etta head into an old warehouse and go to hide down at the far end. Windmark and his people walk through one of the doors on the other end. A pack of Loyalists arrive to join the hunt.

Our heroes run through the warehouse looking for some place to go. An Observer appears in front of Etta and she takes him down with a zinging shot. They have split up now, with Walter and Etta on one side of the room and Peter and Olivia on the other.

Etta tells Walter to run, saying she will cover him and he takes off to a safer place. Peter and Olivia make their way up a set of stairs with Peter saying, they'll "double back" to get Walter and Etta.

Loyalists are patrolling the outside of the building but do not see Olivia and Peter run across the roof top and jump down to a lower one. Etta is looking for Walter in the warehouse. Windmark appears behind her and when she turns to face him he backhands her across the face. Her gun goes flying as she sprawls on the floor. When she crawls toward it, Windmark puts his foot over it to block her grasp.

Peter and Olivia find Walter hiding in a cargo box. They get him out of there.

Windmark now has Etta pushed up against a beam with his hand around her neck. He sees the necklace around Etta's neck and asks, "For what purpose? I would like to know." Etta lets him read her memories of the day in the park when she was blowing the daffodil and Peter was holding his arms out for her to come to him. "Love." He says.

She manages to get a knife out of her boot but when she gets ready to bury it in Windmark's neck he catches her hand and forces her to drop it. He lets go of her throat and says, "You never know when to give up."
He steps back and pulls something from his pocket extending his arm towards her.

In another part of the warehouse the sound of a gunshot makes Olivia whip her head around. "Etta," she whispers.

Etta shakily slides to the ground, trying to catch her breath as Windmark walks slowly away. Etta has her hand wrapped around the bullet necklace. Her knuckles are bloody. Peter and Olivia come running to their daughter's aid, with Peter trying to stop the bleeding from the hole in her chest. They tell her that she's going to be okay and they have to move her. She says they have to go on without her, as she would only slow them down. Walter looks on with tears in his eyes.

There is a quiet beep and they all look down to see that Etta has activated the anti-matter device she was holding in her hand. It starts counting down from 59 seconds. Olivia looks into Etta's eyes, telling her "I love you so much." Etta replies, "I know."

With hands drenched in the blood of their daughter Peter cradles Etta as he repeats, "No," over and over again. Olivia's hands are equally covered as she takes the bullet necklace from Etta. Peter says, "I can't leave you, not again."

From behind him, Walter gently reminds Peter, "Son, we have to go." The anti-matter device is now at 27 seconds. A Loyalist reports that so far there has been no sign of the three remaining fugitives. Windmark speaks quietly, "Love. They will go back for her."

Observers and Loyalists start to trickle into the warehouse to gather around Etta's body. "You were wrong," one of them remarks. He stoops down and sees that Etta no longer has her necklace. Then the anti-matter device beeps showing three seconds on it's display.

From an unfortunately safe distance away Windmark watches as there are some flashes of light and the warehouse disappears.

Walter, Peter and Olivia have also watched the destruction from a different vantage point. Olivia clutches the necklace while Peter just stares ahead stoically clenching his jaw. Walter is the only one to speak. In a soft voice he says, "She's gone, son."

Whoa. What an episode! First of all I wasn't expecting Etta to die. I wasn't really expecting anyone to die. I may be a little naive because I did see a poll on Seriable.com that was asking which character did we think was going to die? When I checked it the answer was Etta. (I voted Broyles, only because I couldn't imagine Peter, Olivia or Walter dying. I didn't want Broyles to die either but I had to pick someone.)

I feel like that Samsung commercial that is on all the time now. *fist up by my ear* Mind . . . blown *flinging open hand* [explosion sound]

It's sad that Olivia and Peter finally got their daughter back and now she's gone again. I'm thinking that some of that "it takes so long to teach someone to block the Observers" stuff was set-up for the fact that she was going to be dead by the end of the episode.
I also feel like this is Fringe drawing yet another parallel within it's characters. Walter lost Peter (even though he has him back now, well one of them) and now Peter's lost Etta. I hope it's not going to come full circle and Walter lose Peter again. I'm a little scared to see how the series is going to end. What if they all die?

Some other random observations about this episode:

What happened to Astrid after she crawled out of the vent? Was she just waiting back at the lab?

If Peter, Walter, Olivia and Etta are so 'Wanted' how come the Observer in the shop at the beginning didn't know who Peter was? Are only some of them in 'law' enforcement and the rest are just leading a normal (for them) life?

Also, wouldn't Peter using money instead of bartering with walnuts or whatever thrown a red flag up? I guess maybe it did because the Observer did want him detained. IDK.

What did you think? What was your favorite or least favorite part of the episode?

I was informed over the summer that the commenting part of this blog is giving people problems. This design is a quote from Fringe Season 2, Episode 22 (Over There Part 2) when Olivia crossed over into the alternate universe to convince Peter to come back with her. She said to him, "You belong with me." Our graphic features that phrase set against the background of a sketched heart. On the lower right side of the heart are the words: "Olivia and Peter."
This design says: "Dear God - Is it second guess everything I do day? Because I haven't been informed." This was a sarcastic comment that Walter Bishop made in Fringe Season 3, Episode 14 ("6B") when he got frustrated with Astrid. This would make a great gift for someone who's a fan of Walter or just feels that they get no respect.
This hilarious text only design says: "Science is patience." in blue letters. Under that in red wording it reads: "It's also slimy." These quotes were taken from a conversation that Walter had with Astrid Farnsworth during the Fringe episode "Night of Desirable Objects" (2x02).
Her response was met with a chorus of whoops and hollers from the audience and laughter from the cast due to the suggestive nature of her phrasing.
It's Comic Con time again people!! I unfortunately am not there but you can bet I will be living vicariously through the various videos and snippets that are sure to pop up around the interwebs.

This particular video is of an uncensored (Yay!) roundtable discussion with several actors and actresses, one of which is my beloved Joshua Jackson. He talks fan encounters, a teensy bit about the upcoming final season of Fringe and how he was skeptical about his Dawson's Creek audition.

It's a little over an hour long, but totally worth taking the time to watch. Enjoy!Thought Provoking Shirtshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03999425034578419706noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6507129719124988685.post-51724616828971885482012-06-27T01:58:00.000-04:002012-06-27T01:58:16.168-04:00Promo Video for Fringe "The Box" 3x02Yes, this video is extremely old but I needed a Fringe fix and I remembered this video. Not all of it made it to air, which is too bad, because Peter saying, "And that would be a problem because?" is all kinds of hot.
John Noble cleared up something I was questioning about the finale. I had been wondering what Bell meant by saying "I am." after his playing God speech to Walter. John Noble says that Bell was implying that he was God. I enjoy seeing John Noble's take on the episodes.
Season 4 Episode 22 ... Brave New World Part 2

Original Airdate Friday, May 11, 2012

As usual this episode managed to pack more emotions and feelings ending in 'ness into an hour than should be legal. There was sadness, happiness, funniness, grossness, freakiness, craziness, badassedness, universe hoppingness, sweetness, joyfulness, angriness, unbelieveableness, awesomeness and epicness. I'm sure I left some out.

The show opens with William and Belly standing in the middle of a lush field with mountains in the distance and large creatures grazing on the grass. It looks like some of the Porcupine Hybrids are flying through the sky. This would all be very Jurassic Park awesome-like if we didn’t already know that Belly was planning to destroy two universes so this one will survive. Bell says, “The Bible tells us God created his universe in seven days. It’s taken me considerably longer.” If Bell is expecting mad props from Walter he is sadly mistaken.

The outdoor image fades around them to show they are actually standing in a regular room. Bell was just giving Walter a preview of his FreakVerse, they weren’t really there.

Walter starts to try to tell Bell that this plan of his shouldn’t be carried out. Bell patiently explains that it’s too late, everything is already in motion and there’s no stopping it now.

Bell insists that it was divine intervention that brought Walter to him after all these years. I’m sure Walter catching up to him had nothing to o do with DRJ and Bell managing to cross the Fringe Division’s path at every turn lately. And even though Walter may have lost some of his marbles, the man is still a freaking genius and could tell Bell’s “signature” formula. Bell’s quite tickled with his "Divine Intervention" theory, but Walter just looks flabbergasted.

Olivia and Peter arrive at the lab in Harvard calling out for Walter, but getting no answer. The lab looks almost empty, I don’t remember ever seeing it with so little going on. Olivia leaves a message on Astrid’s voicemail asking for her to call her back. Peter's right arm is in a sling, recovering from the injuries he received from Jones. (Good thing our boy is left handed.)

Peter finds Walter’s abandoned Lemon Pig Brain Cortexiphan cake and says, “Whatever Walter was baking it didn’t turn out too hot.” I’m just very glad Peter didn’t decide to taste it, but I guess by now he’s learned his lesson. Peter thinks maybe they went out to breakfast and offers to get Olivia a cup of coffee from the pot he’s started.

She realizes that she’s about to make Slingy McSlingerson make her coffee when probably he should be the one to be waited on. She goes to the coffee pot and takes over the task.

Peter tries to get her to talk about the “Jedi mind trick you pulled on me back on the roof.” But she doesn’t want to talk about it, saying it was the Cortexiphan. She does agree to undergo some Walter-tests whenever he surfaces.

Olivia’s *Sprint* phone rings with the ID showing Private Caller. When she answers it’s Jessica Holt, saying she thinks someone’s been following her. Olivia tells her to lock everything down and sit tight. While Jessica is talking to Olivia the camera shows a suit clad man from behind, standing in the background of Jessica's apartment. After Jessica hangs up it is shown that it is September. Jessica appears to not know that he is there and walks off into another room. September takes a few steps in her direction but stops short, looking down to see he is standing on a glowing piece of floor that has markings on it that look like and Os and Xs. Awww, someone's giving September hugs and kisses. Sadly, I don't think that's what is happening as now September seems unable to move from the spot he is standing on.

Then the Fringe opening credits roll and the first set of commercials come on giving me some time to ponder what it is that this episode has in store for us.

Olivia and Peter arrive at Jessica's house in Quincy, Massachusetts and the door swings open easily at the touch of Olivia's hand. They make their way inside but Olivia gets no answer to her repeated calls of "Jessica?" Olivia finds that her purse, wallet and phone are still on the table. Peter makes his own discovery of a jagged hole in the floor, all the way to the foundation, that apparently Jessica did not mention during her phone call to Olivia.

Knowing what Olivia must be thinking Peter says, "Liv, you didn't put this woman's life in danger. You're the one that saved her." At that moment Broyles calls Olivia to tell her that Astrid has just gotten out of surgery at Boston General. An anonymous phone call alerted paramedics to her location and they were able to get her to the hospital. She's in stable condition. That is a huge relief. I didn't think they would kill Astrid off, but I didn't want to count my miraculous recoveries before they hatched either.

Olivia inquires, "What about Walter?" Broyles answers, "You should bring him with you." So now they realize that Walter is really and truly missing. They trek on over to the hospital to pay Astrid a visit. She looks pretty good for someone who just had major surgery. She tells them the last place she saw Walter was at the warehouse by the waterfront, where she was shot. Since the paramedics did not pick her up from a warehouse they assume that whoever called them took her elsewhere to be found. Peter says, "Which means they didn't want you dead," and gives Astrid's hand a reassuring squeeze.

Astrid remembers that it was several armed men who were at the docks and managed to shoot her. She thinks that they have most likely taken Walter. Her eyes fill with tears and she looks to Peter saying, "Peter, I tried to protect him, but I couldn't get him out of there." Tears roll down her face and her voice fades out in breathless sorrow. Peter soothes her, saying that he knows she did all she could.

Astrid gives them the details of where the warehouse was and also mentions the weird sounds they
encountered. Broyles says he'll let them know if the Boston Police Department gets any information on Jessica Holt and then Olivia and Peter leave to go check out the docks. Right before she leaves Astrid says to Olivia, "Hey, be careful."

Peter and Olivia arrive down at the warehouse and take a few moments to climb out of their *Nissan* SUV. They are still trying to figure out what the shenanigans with the nanites and deadly sun rays had to do with Bell trying to collapse the universes. They go in the door marked A1 Imports Distribution Co, which is not locked (just as it wasn't when Walter and Astrid went there in the last episode.) For bad guys who are creating a new species they aren't very worried about someone just walking in.

In the warehouse what they find is September still perched atop his section of floor. Peter jogs toward him saying, "What are you doing here?" September replies, "I'm not here of my own volition." Then the beautiful red-haired Jessica come around the corner pointing a gun at the three of them. After Jessica insists that Olivia put down her weapon if they want to see Walter again, Olivia complies and slides her gun over near Jessica's feet.

The markings on the piece of floor that September is standing on are Runes and they are rendering him immobile. Since September has always showed a significant interest in Olivia's life, Jessica says, "Dr. Bell said that if we put you in harms way, he'd appear."

Olivia realizes that the reason Jessica was more than happy to be Walter's lab rat during the nanite incident was because she was a set-up. Jessica's been working for Bell the whole time and the background details she originally gave, like having a daughter, were not true.

To test Olivia's reaction and relationship to September Jessica fires three successive shots directly at him. September calls on his Observer skillz and catches all three bullets without flinching and scatters them on the ground. As one badass Superbeing in the presence of another the corner of Olivia's mouth quirks up a slightly in appreciation as she watches September's little feat.

As Jessica explains that the Observers aren't magical, they are just equipped to move faster than fast, she pulls out another bigger, bulkier gun and takes aim again. When she pulls the trigger September's hand shoots up to close around the bullet. He stands still for a moment and then lowers his arm, revealing a blood spot right in the area of his heart -- if Observers have hearts, that is. This gun was an invention of William Bells and fires a speeding bullet, well, faster than a speeding bullet.

As Jessica raises the weapon again, Olivia starts to plead with her to calm down and tell her what she wants. Instead of giving her a real answer, Jessica sneers and says, "He feels no emotion, perhaps no pain. This won't upset him. But it appears to upset you." When Olivia tries again to talk her down, this time Jessica pauses and takes a deep breath like she might be considering it, even lowers the gun for a moment. Then, in a blink she fires on September again, three more quick shots. Olivia throws her hand out and the bullets hit her palm. One, two, three, jolting her a little with the impact.

With no hesitation Olivia opens her hand and gives it the slightest nudge in Jessica's direction. The bullets fly from her palm and embed themselves in Jessica's body, causing her to drop the gun and slump to the ground. Peter looks a little scared and if an Observer could look shocked then I think September does. Olivia is just as disturbed as they are.

Olivia wants to tend to September's wound, but he explains that he's unable to move at the moment. Peter gets off the phone and advises them that help is on the way. He is unable to touch the glowing Runes that September is standing on. September expresses curiosity that Jessica and Company knew enough to use this against him.

Peter finds a scrap of metal and scrapes it against the edge of one of the Runes until it flares and goes out. The hold it has over September is released and he sinks to a sitting position. Unfortunately he doesn't know where Walter is.

Olivia tells September about him visiting her at the Opera House and how he was shot then. Now they know how he got the wound. She says, "You came to me at the Opera House. You said in every version of the future, I would have to die." September answers, "I did not. Or I have not yet. I suspect I understand now. The conversation you are referring to has not yet happened for me. I must investigate the future and find out what I meant. I hope I get back to you in time." Sirens are heard in the background as he gets up and starts walking away from Peter and Olivia. As they watch, he disappears into thin air.

Olivia wonders how they'll get information on where Walter is now that the only person who could help them has been killed. Peter calls upon his mad scientist genes and informs Olivia that even though Jessica may be dead, they can still get answers out of her.

They take Jessica's corpse back to the lab and fit her with wires and electrodes. Olivia is wielding a huge hypodermic needle and pulls up one of Jessica's sleeves. Peter stops her, saying, "No, no, not there. Right here, right in the thinker," as he taps his temple. That made me giggle a bit in an otherwise tense moment. Olivia sinks the needle into the side of Jessica's head and I'm wondering how it didn't come out the other side, it was so long.

Nina Sharp comes hustling through the door with equipment and a small team behind her asking, "How long has she been dead?" Only about 25 minutes, Peter informs her. That's just the ticket and Nina begins to ready her devices and give orders. She moves purposefully around Jessica something that sounds like a high-tech nail gun to drive metal prongs into her temples.

While Peter works to bring down Jessica's core body temperature so they can connect with what's left of her consciousness. Nina and Olivia have a heart to heart. Olivia is realizing that Bell has been using her feelings whether they be fear or anger to activate the Cortexiphan in her system. Nina tells her, "It was your capacity for feeling that made William and Walter so sure that you were the perfect candidate for the trials. And I don't know what it is, but William must want -- no, he needs something from you. Something only you can provide."

On the cargo boat Walter and William Bell a heart to heart of their own, well Bell does most of the talking. If I ever thought Walter was hard to paraphrase he's a picnic compared to Bell. Walter wants answers about why Bell is doing this and what kind of outcome he is hoping for. Then, Bell drops this unwanted knowledge on Walter, "Walter, this was all your idea. Peter died. Twice. You hated God. 'What kind of God would cause so much suffering?' That's what you said. So much pain? You decided to create a universe that would operate by your rules and then when you realized that you were smart enough to do it, you got scared. You asked me to cut out a portion of your brain." Walter denies this. "Yes, Walter. We cut those ideas out of your head to literally put the genie back into the bottle. Then I grew older. I grew cynical. I grew cancer. I realized that dosing myself with Cortexiphan would slow it down. But slowing is not stopping. For me it's just a matter of time. The clock is ticking. Tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick. And that's when it occurred to me. You were right, Walter. Walter you were right, right, right. Every rant you ever went on made perfect sense. Suddenly I understood not just you, but everything. God made us in his image. If that is so, if we are capable of being Gods then it is our destiny to do so." Walter tries to argue with him a bit and Belly says, "My dear friend, even if you deny it now you have always been playing God. I am."

So, was Bell saying that he is God? Or that he is playing God? Or something else entirely?

Back at the lab, Peter interrupts the Nina/Olivia moment by telling them that Jessica is ready to go. He throws the switch and the lights go out in the lab, but it manages to reanimate Jessica. This was some freaky shit, y'all. She would open her eyes but they wouldn't work properly and would roll from side to side and all around and in opposite directions. Sometimes one would open and one would stay closed. Sometimes her voice would be deep and electronic sounding, and other times be normal. I guess it was the synapses in her brain firing all weird. She babbled on and on with what sounded like nonsense, but she's really dropping snippets of clues.

They manage to figure out that Bell is on a boat and that he's going to collapse the universes using a great energy source. Before they can get out of her what the energy source is that he is using she goes off on a tangent about Noah and him bring creatures on the ark two by two. Olivia starts to get angry and grabs her by the shoulder. When she does a charge shoots through Jessica, the lights blow out in the lab and biblical babblings are over for good.

After witnessing what just happened, Nina takes a reading of Olivia's electromagnetic energy. It's off the charts. Say Hello to Bell's energy source. The one upside to Bell using Olivia as the destructor of the Universes is that it gives Nina an angle with which she might be able to track Bell.

At the Boston Federal Building, it is confirmed that a cargo ship left the docking area about six hours ago. Nina fills Broyles in on what they know so far. Basically that Olivia is the catalyst to the collapse of the universes. "Lucky me," Olivia deadpans. But the frequency that Olivia is giving off will match to the point where the Universes are intersecting. It is there that William Bell will most likely be with Walter because that will be the only place that makes it through the annihilation.

Reports are starting to come in of disasters. One is a large storm about 80 miles east off the coast of Boston. There's also been three micro-quakes in New York, Vermont and Massachusetts. These are signs that the Universes are starting to come together.

Peter realizes that Olivia has disappeared and finds her in another room. She's wonders aloud what it is that William has in store for her. She says after all these years and all that she's been through, nothing's changed, she still feels like that scared, alone child in Jacksonville and she's still being experimented on by William Bell. Peter corrects her and reminds her that this time she's not alone. They hug.

Back on the boat Walter is staring thoughtfully at a glass case that houses a gun and some bullets. Bell shakes him out of his pensive moment, telling him to come look out the window. He appeals to the scientist in Walter and tells him, "You've never seen anything like this, it's marvelous." Walter crosses the room slowly and looks out, asking "How?" Bell responds, "Olivia. You were right, Walter. She truly is a remarkable girl."

The camera pulls back showing that the Freight Liner that they are in is surrounded by a vicious looking ring of dark clouds with lightning prominently flecked throughout. The vastness of the storm makes the huge boat look small in comparison.

The FBI researchers have pinpointed the location of the storm. Broyles puts a call in for helicopters and sends Nina, Olivia and Peter off to the coordinates of the squall.

While the choppers make their way to the location, Walter is still desperately trying to convince William to drop this idea. But William is having none of it, telling Walter, "You may be sad now, Walter. You may be frightened. But you'll see, we deserve this."

The choppers reach the coordinates but all that is below them is an expanse of undisturbed water. Peter is the only one that can see the boat. After a bit of confusion they realize that the boat has already phased out of sync with this universe but since Peter is from the other side he can still see it.

Next is the obstacle of getting to the boat. Normally they would need the bridge to cross to the Other Side. But now that Olivia has so much active Cortexiphan in her she should be able to cross without the aide of the bridge. Peter and Olivia have to do what they do best and work as a team since he can't cross without her and she can't see the boat without him. Olivia worries that maybe she isn't up to this task. In a very sweet encouraging and motherly moment Nina says, "You have the most extraordinary gifts but the only one you were denied was knowing it. You've had the power all along."

Peter asks Olivia if she is ready and they gather hand in hand in the open doorway of the helicopter. That exchange reminded me of them getting ready to take on the machine together in The Last Sam Weiss. Peter watches the boat-that-only-he-can-see carefully. Olivia says, "If you've lost your mind, now would be the time to tell me." He just grins at her and lets her know when it is time to jump.

They free fall towards the water but seconds later land with twin thumps on a container unit on the deck of the cargo ship. The storm rages around them and Peter almost slides off the edge of the container. He only has one useful arm and is scrambling to hang on. Olivia manages to grab him and haul him back up to safety.

That fall had to fricking hurt. Unless they were right above the ship the whole time. I had no frame of reference since we couldn't see the ship. Peter produces a gun from his jacket, to Olivia's surprise. He just says, "It was the pilot's. You can't be the only one who always gets to carry a gun."

They make their way down into the lower decks of the ship as Peter comments, "I think this is his ark."

Bell is off in his own little world clasping his hands and reciting a poem. (The poem is The Lake Isle of Innisfree.) Walter uses this chance to remove the gun from the case and load it. While Walter holds the gun I'm thinking C'mon Walter, shoot the shit out of him. Bell asks Walter if he knows what his is quoting and Walter says, "Yeats."

Peter and Olivia come bursting in, guns at the ready. William takes this opportunity to launch into another long soliloquy of his own composing, "Well, this is unexpected. You know, I was not planning on having any humans. What a troublesome species we can be, after all. I had assumed that Walter and I would die off and my new universe would thrive unencumbered by the savage whims of mankind. But, I see I was wrong. Look at the two of you. Humans abide, they persevere, they survive. You have earned your right in the New Order. A final breeding pair. Amongst all others, you will be the new Adam and Eve." He says he can't turn off what's happening. Olivia is the impetus and her very existence, the fact that she's living is what's causing the worlds to come apart.

Walter's still clutching the gun and he says "Forgive me." All of a sudden I think I know what he's going to do. I'm hoping it's put a bullet in Bell, but now I'm just not so sure. He turns and shoots Olivia right in the forehead. Even though I thought that might happen I still yelled, "Oh. My. God." Olivia's head rocks back a little and she falls to her knees and then sideways. Damn, Olivia got shot in the head in the Season 3 and 4 finale. Can't a girl get a break?

Peter screams an agonized, "Nooooo!" and runs to her side. Outside the storm is stripped away to show blue sky with the choppers hovering above the boat. Peter cradles Olivia in his arms, repeating "No," over and over. Then he says, "You killed her." With tears in his eyes, Walter turns the gun on Bell who mumbles, "Yes indeed, he did. Very clever, old friend. Perhaps we should consider learning a lesson from the past. [He dings his captain's bell.] You paid a steep price." As he starts to shimmer and fade out he says, "We could've all been so happy together." Peter is still holding Olivia's lifeless body as tears roll down his face. (And then, there's a commercial. *grumbling*)

So the commercial gave me time to think, assuring myself that Olivia wasn't really dead. I imagined that she would be like Wolverine from X-Men and the bullet would work it's way out of the wound and she'd sit up and say, "Hey guys, why so sad? Let's order Damiano's." At least that's what I hoped would happen.

When the show comes back, Walter tries to pry Olivia out of Peter's arms. Peter is understandably angry and doesn't want to let her go. Walter tells Peter they have to move quickly if Olivia is to be saved. Peter grunts out, "Can't save her, she's dead." Walter says, "You know very well that doesn't always stop me!" Then to get Peter to pay attention to him he slaps him hard across the face. He orders Peter to go get a letter opener and clear off the table top.

Walter carries Olivia over to the table and places her gently on it. Peter watches dejectedly as Walter starts to prod around the back of Olivia's head. Walter explains that since Olivia is chock-full of Cortexiphan and brain tissue is regenerative if he can get the bullet out quick enough then any damage that Olivia suffered should be reversed.

He takes the letter opener and poises it at the back of Olivia's neck. Peter stops him, wanting to know what he is doing. Walter /explains/ he has to make an exit wound for the bullet. He plunges the letter opener into the flesh of Olivia's neck and rotates it until he has made a hole.

Walter then finds a long metal pointer and slowly feeds it little by little into the hole in Olivia's forehead. Peter is visibly trying to keep a grip on himself as he watches Walter do this. When Walter has it buried deep in her skull he says, "I'm sorry, Olive," and then whacks the end with a stapler. There is a pinging sound and the bullet clatters out of her neck onto the table. Walter slowly withdrawals the rod from her forehead.

It is tense now, waiting. I'm waiting for something to happen and am starting to lose hope. Peter chokes out a strangled, "Walter." Then, even though it's probably only been thirty seconds it felt like forever the hole in Olivia's skin starts to get smaller. "It worked." Walter says. The wound on Olivia's brow seals completely shut and vanishes, leaving only the small trickle of blood as any evidence it was even there. She shifts slightly on the table, looking for all the worlds like she is moving in her sleep. Walter and Peter both weep in relief.

At the Capital Building in DC, Broyles is advised that the search for Bell has come up empty, even with international cooperation. (I think interuniversal cooperation is what is needed in this instance though.) The creatures that Bell was housing are being contained until further research can be done on them. The Fringe Team will be the ones to do the research. Broyles is commended for the Fringe Division's efforts in saving the world(s). The Fringe Division will receive additional funding so its operational and scientific areas can be upgraded. He is also promoted from Colonel to General.

Nina Sharp meets Broyles when his meeting adjourns. After telling her how it went he offers her the job of heading up the science division of Fringe. She laughs and loops her arm through his.

At the hospital, Peter and Walter are waiting to be able to go in and see Olivia. Walter is in the middle of explaining to Peter that he thinks that Olivia has probably used up most of the Cortexiphan in her system in light of recent events. He interrupts himself as a nurse walks by with a tray of cups filled with a yellow substance. He leans forwards and says, "Excuse me, Miss. Is that lemon Jell-O?" She gives him a look and informs him, "These are urine samples." Walter politely tells her, "Oh, well in that case, no thank you. I'm more peckish than thirsty." A look of incredulity slides across her face and she walks away. Walter leans back in his chair and smiles benevolently.

Peter wants to know if this means that Olivia is normal now. Walter says that it is possible that in the future some abilities will come through again, since the Cortexiphan left a biological signature, but for the main part Olivia could be considered ordinary.

Astrid comes around, she's still in her hospital garb but she wanted to check on Olivia. As if on cue a doctor comes up and says, "She's all done. She's ready to go home." Peter leaves to go get Olivia and Astrid takes up the seat he just vacated. She pulls a bag of Red Vines out of her robe and offers Walter one. He thanks her and gets her name right. She glances at him and comments, "You just called me by my real name." "Did I?" he questions, with a twinkle in his eye.

Peter enters Olivia's room and brandishes a paper for her to see. He's found a house for them. He tells Olivia that he wanted them to have a little bit of normal in their lives. He mentions that September must've been right, because Olivia did have to die in every timeline. Olivia starts to try to tell him something and he gets worried, wondering if the doctor has told her something else. Yes, it turns out that there is some more news to share. She pauses for a moment and looks deep in his eyes before she says, "Peter, I'm pregnant."

Peter watches her face for a moment as if to make sure he's heard her correctly. She nods slightly and smiles a little. He starts smiling too and leans in to kiss her. From the doorway a clearing throat is heard and they look over to see Walter and Astrid standing there. It looks like everyone got the news together. They finally get their kiss.

Back at the lab Walter is digging in the fridge and whistling "Rock-A-Bye Baby." He's in the process of throwing together a peanut butter and jelly sandwich when he looks up to see September standing before him. Walter stops whistling and says, "I don't suppose you're here for a sandwich?" In that patented Observer delivery September tells him, "We have to warn the others. They are coming."
"Who's coming?" Walter questions.

Apparently Bad Wo-Bot is coming. Yes folks, that's the end of Season 4. It was a hell of a ride. Some of the best television I've ever seen and definitely the best acting.

Additional Musings:

So, Olivia IS pregnant. But really, who didn't see that coming? Etta was kind of a giveaway. I admit as cynical as I am and even though I really don't want the show to start revolving around her being pregnant, I was smiling a little by the end of that scene. How could I not? They seemed so happy.

Jessica said that September seemed uber-interested in what happened in Olivia's life, but I always thought that September was more of Peter's guardian angel. Unless it still all comes back to Olivia.

I'm curious how they would've ended the show if there was no Season 5 on the horizon. My crack-pot theories are that:
A. Walter would've shot Bell and somehow managed to save the universes.
B. They would not have been able to save Olivia.
C. The collapse of the universes would've been unavoidable and everybody died.
D. They find out they all died in a plane crash and were in Purgatory for 4 years. Uh, wait. No that's another show.

I'm hoping that maybe on one of the future boxed sets they will release the alternate ending.

Jasika Nicole and Josh Jackson really had some emotional stuff in this episode. They killed it.

While I'm excited to see what Season 5 has in store, I am sad that it will be the beginning of the end. But there's no need to worry about that at the moment because it will be awhile before that gets here.

What did you think? What do you think Season 5 has in store? Did you think this was the best of the Fringe Season finales so far? Did anything surprise you about this episode? What was your favorite part?

Thanks for reading!Thought Provoking Shirtshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03999425034578419706noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6507129719124988685.post-15823313484251278442012-05-10T01:56:00.000-04:002012-05-10T01:56:49.633-04:00FRINGE - "Brave New World" Extended Movie TrailerIt's almost here and the Season 4 Fringe finale looks like it promises to be one of the best ever. I wish this were a real movie trailer. Can you imagine watching Fringe on "the big screen?" Whoa.
I think I've watched it five times already hoping to glean a clue of some sort between all the snippets.

Tonight's episode ... wait for it ... was mind-blowing. I don't know how often I say that about this show, but each and every time I do I mean it. I'm still reeling a little from the events of tonight.

It starts in a building in Boston. People are gliding down the escalator, no one really stands out. I cannot put my finger on it, but there is something about the background music of this scene ... it's calm but it gave me a weird feeling. But of course that weird feeling could just be attributed that I'm settling in to watch Fringe, or the pizza I ate earlier. But whatev.

A man walks up to get some coffee from the booth in the middle of the place. Behind him is a sign that says Clane Center. The barista recognizes him on sight and already knows what he wants. While it is being made he pays with a nifty little app from his **Sprint** phone. (Ahem, product placement, in the first two minutes no less. That's okay though because I think it would've been subliminal except that I happened to pause the picture right when he was looking at it and I can clearly read Sprint. Very Clever.)

He gets his coffee and takes the escalator down, walking down the last few steps as people are prone to do. Go figure, someone creates a machine so you don't have to use the stairs and people still step down them. I wonder why they don't just use the regular stairs. Do they really save that much extra time, like those people who inch forward at a red traffic light, do you really arrive earlier at your destination because of that. (Hmm, apparently I feel strongly about this subject.)

He leaves the building, sipping his coffee as he walks out. He takes a couple strides before he gets a confused look on his face. He drops his coffee cup and falls to his knees. Right before he faceplants into the concrete the two women near him see that smoke is coming out of his mouth and nose. Damn, that must've been some hot coffee. McDonald's has got nothin' on this place.

Several other people around them start collapsing and spewing puffs of smoke also. One woman's lips char to a crusty black right before she succumbs.

One of the two unaffected (so far) women says to the other, "Don't move, I think when they move, they die. Nobody move."

I know I didn't move all through the credit sequence. I wasn't taking any chances.

Next, one of my favorite types of scenes. Olivia and Peter in bed together. No artsy blue stuff though, they appear to be looking for a place to move into. Olivia exercises her veto rights a couple times before Peter finds one that sounds a little more acceptable.

This one has a dog run and a fireplace in the bedroom. Peter reveals that since he was allergic to dogs when he was a kid Walter made their Lab non-allergenic. Olivia asks if it has a nursery. Peter says, "Nursery?" while he searches her face. She only locks eyes with him and repeats herself. He starts smiling while she leans toward him. Then of course the inevitable happens, as it always does when our leads are about to either confess something important or get it on or as in this case probably a combination of the two, the phone rings. So they both turn away from each other to grab their phones (I think they accidentally loaded a cock block app on their phones. Think about through the history of the show how many times this has happened.) The question of the moment was never answered either. Soooo ... is she or isn't she? Was that a major hint? Or just some just-in-case future thinking?

Astrid and Walter are at the scene of the event, even though they are standing behind the crime scene tape Walter is barking instructions to the hazmat suited men on the inside perimeter. Trying to direct him to the right victim he yells out, "No, you Ninny! The next one over!" Astrid distracts him a little by buttoning up his coat and brushes off his remarks to her about being a mother hen, saying "Just humor me, maybe I like doing it."

Hazmat Dude 1 comes over and tells Walter that the air is clear. He enters and maneuvers around the still unmoving standing people as well as the dead people, some of which still have wafts of smoke trickling from their mouths.

Walter find the original victim and picks up his [Sprint] cell phone which is still on the payment confirmed screen from earlier. When Walter mentions it Astrid assures him it's just a way people pay their bills now and didn't have anything to do with what happened to the man.

Peter and Olivia are now walking with Broyles through the building. He is giving them the details, the major one being that over two dozen people were affected by some type of Spontaneous Human Combustion. Peter points out, "You know that's a myth, right?" Sure, Peter just like Alternate Universes, doomsday machines, shape shifters and unexitable towns are a myth too, right? Broyles just keeps talking expressing that he hopes Walter can get some answers for them. (I'm always ribbing whoever in the Fringe team expresses disbelief, but I know that someone has to be the voice of reason.)

The setting inside the building mimics the outside one, people upright and still while several bodies are prone on the ground emitting dark puffs. Walter crouches down next to one of them and starts up a one-sided conversation about how he had a similar watch once.

He is about to launch into his Uncle's fondness for Rhubarb pie when a pretty, red haired lady close by interrupts him, wanting to know if she is going to die. He gives her an honest answer telling her he doesn't know. She says to him, "What are you?" He replies, "I'm human, what are you? Is this some sort of alien invasion, are you part of --" She corrects herself and says she wanted to know why he was there, if perhaps he is a doctor. He lets her know he's a scientist.

Well, now that that's out of the way and Walter knows she's not an alien he wants to take a blood sample which she readily agrees to. He assures her "the discomfort will only be momentary," to which she quips back "That's what all you men say," getting a little smile from Walter.

While he's drawing her blood he notices that she has smudge marks on her fingertips that she assumes is from the escalator. Astrid checks the blood and confirms that there is something amiss there, but until they get back to the lab she won't know too much more. As Walter questions the vial of blood trying to discover it's secrets, someone calls out that they've found something under the escalator.
What they find is a machine that is producing nanites. For the non-techie types (moi) Astrid explains that they are "microscopic, self-replicating robotics." People were picking them up as they rode the escalator.

The nanites are being overloaded by the bio-chemical energy of the people that they are inhabiting. This is what's causing the spontaneous combustion. While the people are remaining still the nanites are not absorbing as much of their energy, but Walter warns that they will continue to become more sensitive until the smallest strain will cause them to go kablooey.

Walter needs a guinea pig and the red haired woman offers herself, but only if her family will be compensated if she doesn't survive. Astrid says that it is Bureau Regulations that her family will be provided for. Upon hearing that Jessica Holt becomes Walter's newest victim, um I mean case study.
Olivia makes sure that she is in sound mind and understands what's about to happen to her.

Back at the lab they've got Jessica laying down on a gurney. She tells Olivia that she's an ER nurse, so she's used to seeing weird things. She makes a phone call to either her husband or her ex, asking him to pick up their daughter.

While she talks to him, I'll take this opportunity to say that Peter's wearing plaid again this week. Awwww, yeeeaaaahhhh, [deep Barry White voice] I meant to comment last week that he was looking mighty fine and between his sexy bed hair at the beginning and the plaid now - whew! Peter might cause the Universe to collapse on it's own just from his sheer sexiness. Although it should definitely be the other way around, he should be able to save the universe that way.

Okay, she's off the phone now and when she hands it to Olivia to put it back in her purse Olivia sees the wallpaper of a young smiling girl on it. While Peter and Walter are working on an antidote Jessica's temperature starts spiking. They start trying to speed up the process for the cure and Olivia goes to Jessica's side to try to help keep her calm.

Jessica is shaking and sweating, her skin turning from cream colored to a very rosy red. Olivia grips her hand and they spend a few moments just breathing together. Then Olivia's face starts to dampen with sweat and beads roll and drip off her chin, but Jessica starts to calm down. Astrid calls out "Her temperature's dropping." Then the power blinks off in the lab. During this whole scene the camera goes from close ups of their clasped hands to Olivia's face to Jessica's face so it's understood that Olivia is drawing the heat out of her and into herself. That's a pretty neat party trick Olivia, or after party trick. I wonder if it works for hangovers?

Very soon the power comes on again and Jessica's vitals are back to non-life threatening ranges. Both Olivia and Walter are at a loss as to how Olivia did what she did. He thinks that the Cortexiphan allowed Olivia to slow down the molecules in Jessica's body which helped her temperature come back down. Peter administers the antidote to render the nanites useless.

Olivia's a little shaken up, understandably so considering what just happened. She walks Jessica out to her police escort. Along the way Jessica tells Olivia a little bit about her daughter. After they part ways Broyles calls Olivia to say he knows where the nanites came from.

Peter, Olivia and Broyles check out the surveillance camera footage at the building. There in the cavity between the escalators (where the nanite producing device was found) David Robert Jones can be seen crouching down, naturally up to no good. About ten minutes after this was recorded was when the incident occurred.

The only thing this really helps them to know is that Jones is in their universe. They still don't know what he wants or why he's doing what he's doing. They don't know if this nanite thing had something to do with his whole MUWHAHAHA evil plan to destroy the universes and make his own.

At the lab Walter is taking a closer look at the nanites. He realizes that he recognizes their structure. Walter is adamant that Jones did not make these nanites on his own. He says, "There's only one person who would construct this particular pattern." "Who?" Astrid asks.

Well, as the saying goes, "Ask and you shall receive." We see David Robert Jones walking down a hallway adjusting his tie. He enters a dimly lit room. There is someone else in the room, but they have their back to Jones. Jones basically says that they've been outsmarted by Olivia again. The thus-far unidentified person issues a deep, throaty chuckle and slowly turns. "Don't be so sure," says William Bell.

So that's what Belly's been doing in this timeline. Standing in that room with his back to the door, waiting for DRJ to come so he could say that and blow all the Fringe fans minds who thought that he wasn't going to be on the show again. Well played, sir. Not to mention that Bell's real life alter-ego Leonard Nimoy had said that he had retired from acting. See the lengths that people go to for this show? (I'd make a Star Trek reference here but I was never into Star Trek. I guess I can throw in a Live Long and Prosper. Isn't that good for all situations? I got it! How about it looks like Bell Lived Long and Prospered? I tried.)

Jones is feeling a little down in the dumps because he just can't seem to pull one over on Olivia Dunham. So then DRJ and Bell use a chess metaphor to "hint hint" of some impending doom. So, long quote time: Bell says, "In this game, the skill one must have above all else is patience. The board changes, but very slowly. The art of chess, the art is knowing when a piece is most valuable and then in that very moment being willing to sacrifice it. For in the vacuum created by the loss of what is most precious, opportunity abounds. Influence is maximized and desire becomes destiny. For example, on this board the most valuable piece is the Bishop. Therefore for the game to be won ..."
"The Bishop must be sacrificed." Jones finishes.

Hold up. What's this talk about sacrificing a Bishop? There is to be no Bishop sacrificing on this show. There I have spoken. It is so.

So, Jones ignores my above statement and says he'll tend to it. Pffftt. See if I get him anything for Christmas this year.

Walter and Olivia meet with Nina and Walter spins his idea that this nanotech was made by Belly. Nina is sure that Jones must've just gotten access to Bell's records and replicated his work. Walter frustratedly says, "Nina -- it was the work of a master, not an imposter. I know the difference."

There's a bit of a discrepancy as to when Bell died in his car accident. Nina says it was Christmas Day of 2005. Walter says it was New Year's Day because Bell had come to St. Claire's to visit him on New Year's Eve to say goodbye. He says, "They gave me additional shocks that day just to celebrate so I can't remember what he said." He emphasizes "shocks" and throws his hands out.

Nina finally cracks and yells at Walter, telling him that Bell's "accident" was actually a suicide. He had Lymphoma and decided he wanted to end things his own way. Heatedly Walter says, "But, it's still possible." Nina snaps back, "Oh Walter, anything is possible." However, she stands firmly by her claim that Bell would not be behind the destruction of the Universe.

Walter has Peter meet him and Olivia at St. Claire's because he has set out to prove that he is right about Bell coming to visit him. At St. Claire's Walter spends some time in his old <strike>cell</strike> room hoping to jog his memory. As he sits at the table he runs his fingers over the equations that he must've etched into it while he was there.

When he leaves and shuts the door behind him he gazes from the outside in for a moment, then one of the orderlies sees him in the hallway and says, "Well, well Wally Bishop. Hey Doc, you just visiting or you coming back to stay for a while?" Walter grabs his left wrist and his fingers are already doing that nervous twitch that was so prominent when he first got out or when he gets exceptionally freaked out.

Then Peter comes down the hall to save the day and takes Walter to see the Administrator. Walter is full of snark in the office talking to the Administrator. He refers to his stay as an incarceration which is not how she would prefer he reference it and when she says she thinks "treatment" sounds better and "I would think is more reflective of what we do here," Walter darkly states, "Would you now?"

Of course the logs don't show that William Bell ever visited on that night and Olivia gently suggests maybe it was a hallucination. Walter informs her, "My hallucinations were rarely biped and never men." Then he starts to loudly sniff his fingertips then the log book. While Olivia and Peter watch silently Walter takes a little lick of one of the pages. The administrator is puzzled by his behavior probably wondering exactly how he got released from St. Claire's in the first place.

She gives Walter permission to take the log book with him and as he leaves her office he calls out, "I must say, you're much prettier than your predecessor."

That night, back at Olivia's apartment Olivia and Peter are preparing to have a nice dinner. Things are going swimmingly until Olivia minces her finger instead of the garlic. Peter, chivalrous man that he is wraps her finger up quickly and tries to make her feel better with a joke saying, "That's what happens when you drink and mince."

So -- Olivia's drinking? Let's just say that we never saw the glass raised to her lips.

She's obviously perplexed about something. Many somethings I'm sure. She's got plenty to choose from. Turns out though, this time she's thinking about mortality and how chances are slim to none that their life and future together could be deemed normal. She tells Peter she's tired of having Superpowers and she wants them gone. He calmly agrees to help her do just that. He says, "We'll figure it out. Together." Olivia asks, "Is that a personal guarantee?" He foregoes a worded response and kisses her tenderly. Then he looks her in the eye and says, "After all we've been through, I will not lose you again Olivia." (Such a sweet scene.) Then they start to discuss dinner again.

Suddenly, the darkness of night outside the window is replaced by a light so bright the entire kitchen is illuminated. Peter and Olivia pull the curtain back, squinting as they look out the window.

The next scene is of Broyles walking to his car. There are a few people in the parking lot just standing there, looking at something. Broyles follows their gaze and stops short when he sees a huge beam of light engulf a building in the distance. I think this is the most shocked I have ever seen Broyles look. The beam narrows itself down into a concentrated ray that pierces the roof and projects vertically through the building. The windows begin to blow out floor by floor from the top down. It was kind of awesome. In the way that fake movie/TV disasters are. It reminded me of Independence Day. Maybe Walter was right earlier and the aliens really are arriving.

Olivia and Peter are in the SUV driving and talking to Walter on the phone. Walter says that his theory is that Jones is somehow focusing the suns rays in a magnified form to the location of his choosing. Astrid is doing some research for Walter in relation to this and they find out that below Beacon Hill is an oil reservoir. If the sun beam gets close enough to the oil then it is going to be like Hell literally broke loose under Boston. Walter tells Peter that Broyles needs to evacuate all of Boston.

Astrid's findings also show two non-government radio frequencies that seem suspicious. They are 2202.518 and 2202.520. Walter grumbles, "You brilliant bastard, Belly."

Walter calls Olivia and Peter explaining that he thinks that Jones is using satellites to direct the beams from the sun to wherever he wants to send them. He used the radio signals to find the place that Jones is probably using as a command center. He tells them to go to 1600 Beech Street.

After he gets off the phone with them a ding is heard and Walter pulls a small lemon cake out of his little oven. Is it an Easy Bake oven?

Olivia and Peter get to the location and play "I Spy" and find two buildings across from each other with antennas on top. They have to turn them off so they split up and each take one. While they climb up to the roofs of the buildings David Robert Jones watches Peter from a car nearby. After Peter goes inside Jones gets out of the car. At this point all I hear in my head is Jones' lispy voice saying, "The Bishop must be sacrificed."

At the lab Walter is tending to his lemon cake again and for once he didn't make it for a snack. He has laced the lemon cake with pig brain and laced the pig brain with Cortexiphan. When Cortexiphan is heated between 90 and 100 degrees it causes temporary partial tissue regeneration. I admit, I was confused by this. I don't know if he rubbed the pig brain on the paper or what he did but the bottom line is somehow he got smudges from where people had touched the log sheet at St. Claire's to reappear on the paper. So many smudges appear on the paper Walter is not sure that he'll be able to isolate Bell's. There is a weird brown stain which Walter decides to taste. He's really gotta stop doing that. As a side note, the lemon cake that Walter cut in half a few minutes ago now seals itself back together as though it had never been apart. He tells Astrid, "As I said, Cortexiphan is regenerative. Shouldn't eat it though."

I'm not really sure why he didn't just try fingerprinting it in the beginning. I know he said he tried to take a DNA sample but there was none.

Walter proclaims the brown taste-tested smudge to be residue of Chilean Almonds which Belly was so enamored with he would buy them wholesale from the importers. Walter is now in Go mode and is walking around stripping off his lab coat and putting his sweater and jacket on. He tells Astrid he's heading off to A-1 Imports down by the sea port because he is convinced he will find William Bell there. Who woulda thunk it? Walter has come so far from the beginning of the season. It warms my little Fringe obsessed heart.

Walter is so driven on his quest he gives Astrid this little speech before he walks out the door, "I know this is a wild goose chase. A fool's errand and I am a fool. But, no one is asking you to join me Alex. It's my hunch and I am quite capable of pursuing it on my own so Peace Out," complete with a peace sign.

He clomps off down the hall and Astrid sighs as she pulls her jacket off the coat rack as Walter abruptly comes back in saying, "I don't --" "Drive." Astrid finishes. Then she looks at him and says, "Alex?" Walter murmurs, "I was on a roll."

Olivia and Peter are now playing "Sink Jones' Satellite" and Peter is coaching her from the opposite roof. He tells her what to do and says they have to do it together. Wait, so are we gonna see some Polivia action after all? But they are on opposite roofs, how's that going to work? Oh, never mind, when he said "do it together" he meant they had to turn their buttons down together. My bad. Still many euphemisms could still be read in there if you choose to do so.

Peter makes a Ghostbusters joke about not crossing the streams that Olivia doesn't get and Peter finds that endearing. But back to business ... they do what they gotta do and the beam of light slowly shrinks and fades away into nothing.

No sooner have they averted that crises than DRJ appears behind Peter and whacks him across the back. Jones continues to beat the crap out of Peter with a pipe or some kind of metal object. (Update: I now know that it was crowbar that Jones was whumping Peter with.) Olivia sees what's going on and tries to draw a bead but there's too much movement going on. Jones smashes Peter in the shoulder and he yells and grabs it.

At about this time two security guards run up on the roof and pull guns on Olivia. They won't listen to her claim that she's an FBI agent. She uses her mind-bending power to make them drop their guns to the ground. She didn't even have to concentrate hard. Of course she's was probably already on adrenaline overload.

This gives her an idea and she turns towards Peter and Jones again. Jones is behind Peter choking him with ... maybe a gun, I don't know - if he had a gun why wouldn't he just shoot him? -- Olivia watches for a moment, then suddenly she wrenches her right shoulder forward. On the opposite roof Peter mimics her action and breaks away from Jones. Peter's holding his shoulder in pain and his arm is just hanging down by his side. Olivia grabs her shoulder and makes a move like she's putting it back into socket. At this point Peter's not touching his own shoulder anymore but his shoulder rotates itself around and crunches as it slides back into place.

Then Olivia takes a few swings like she's shadowboxing and Peter does what she does, but makes contact with Jones. Then while Jones is bent over Peter body slams him and he flies back into a piece of the satellite. A loud buzzing sound is heard and sparks shoot up.

Peter is holding his shoulder and looking over at Olivia like, "What the fuck woman?" I'm sure it was in a grateful way though. Peter turns his attention back to Jones who is looking even worse than usual. He says, "I got it wrong. I was the sacrifice. I was the Bishop." Then half his face turns to ash and crumbles off. Buh-Bye DRJ. May you not RIP.

Walter and Astrid arrive at Boston Harbor and find a door marked A1 Imports Distribution Co. It's unlocked and they head in. They are greeted by a man who has no idea who the lady is that Walter is asking for. Then realization dawns and he says, "I think I get it. You're talking about that import/export company. Well they went out of business. Three years ago." He gets called on his walkie and leaves. During the time they were talking Astrid had noticed that he had a gun under his coat.

Before she can convince Walter to leave some strange noises start coming from another area of the enclosure. Walter goes to check it out and Astrid follows. The find a room with large cargo bays and more odd noises. They come up on the security guy who isn't very happy that they are there. He has two other men with him, one with a very big automatic gun. Security guy says to non-gun toting guy, "Go and tell him we have visitors."

Astrid acts like she's being compliant and docile and then she kicks the crap out of gun-toting man and she and Walter take off running. Astrid's shooting behind her as they sprint down the hallway. Have we seen Astrid shoot her gun before? I am so glad we get to see Astrid being a badass.

They are running through the maze of cargo containers and dodging bullets. Suddenly security man pops around the corner and I don't even want to write it. I was so horrified when this happened. He fucking shoots Astrid in the back. Astrid, sweet Astrid. In the back. Oh My God. I think I inhaled all the air out of the room in one big gulp when that happened. I was yelling at the TV, my voice cracking from the emotion. I did not see that coming. I think I had the brief thought at one point during the chase, I hope Astrid doesn't get hurt. But this. No.

She jerks to a stop, gasping for air and Walter cradles her head as she sinks to the floor. A red spot is soaking through her white shirt front and slowly getting bigger.

Then William Bell saunters up to them saying, "I'm not sure I ever thought I would see you again. Hello, old friend." Walter just stares up at him.

Bad Wo-bot --- you were an Evil Wo-bot tonight.

I don't think there are enough OMG and WTF's to accurately express how utterly taken by surprise I was by this. I know they are all living on borrowed time, some more than others but that was insane. Thank God there is another episode and that wasn't the season finale. But if that was the almost season finale what the hell kind of cliffhanger are they going to leave us with this time? Which brings me back to the reason I was watching and rewatching next week's preview.

Random Notes / Observations / What-have-yous:

I think that maybe that is why they had the Mother Hen scene at the beginning, to show Astrid's affection for Walter. We already knew it was there but there's nothing like an extra dose of it right before the rug gets pulled out from under you.

So is Olivia pregnant or isn't she? I don't really see her as the type to not tell Peter right away. I know going by the future episode Henrietta's age means that she would be pregnant around this time. I thought when I calculated it out she would've been pregnant before now, like way before now. But my calculations are never very accurate and I don't have enough brain power to think about it right now.
I don't think I'm down with her being pregnant. I just don't see how it would fit into the show, but look at all the other things that have managed to fit into the show.

There was a live tweet with Joel Wyman tonight on Twitter. He's so cool about that.

At first I was pretty sure that Astrid was a goner, but then I saw someone on Twitter brought up that she was alive in the future. (See and who says Social Media can't be used for good.) So hopefully she will be saved. I thought I saw something mentioned about the regenerating powers of Cortexiphan too.

What did you guys think? What were your favorite parts of this episode? What was your favorite quote? What do you think is going to happen next week?
Worlds Apart ... Season 4 Episode 20 ... Original Airdate Friday April 27, 2012

I am still basking in the afterglow of epicness that this episode left me in.

We are back in 2012 for this episode. Walter is all snazzed up in a nice jacket and tie to go head up a meeting with his team and the key players of the Other Side. In attendance are Peter, Broyles, Olivia, Lincoln, Walternate and AltLivia. I briefly wondered where Colonel Broyles was during this meeting when I remembered he must still be in the pokey for being a traitor. I'm wondering why the Astrids weren't in on the meeting?

Walter says that he believes that "Jones is trying to collapse our universes in order to create a gravitational singularity." With the help of a slide projector Walter explains "as our worlds contract, the force becomes greater and greater and as matter and energy compress to a point the density is so great that it has no recourse but to rapidly expand outwards again, creating a Big Bang. Mutual destruction of our side and yours." (I tried to paraphrase that but gave up after three false starts.)

Walter thinks that Jones is trying to create a universe that is all his own, one where he controls all laws of physics and nature. Basically Jones has one giant God Complex. After Walter mentions that he stumbled upon this theory during a dream, his credibility balloon starts to deflate. The most unlikely of all allies comes to his defense in Walternate who speaks up and says "given what we know about Jones' actions so far, what Dr. Bishop suggests should not be overlooked."

Walternate's gaze in this scene was so heavy. Whether it's all the turmoil he is facing or has faced, I don't know. His right eye looked like it was closed also, not sure if that was a trick of the lighting or if that's a John Noble trick to differentiate their characteristics.

Peter just has to go and ask doesn't he? He wants to know how Jones would make this happen. We are then taken to Sydney, Australia where a young woman stands consulting a map, then she checks a watch-like device on her arm that is showing a countdown.

In Beijing, China a man consults a map and checks his matching timer. This action repeats in The Himalayas in Nepal. Each subsequent check of the timer devices shows the countdown getting lower and lower.
In Manhattan, New York a young man hops out of a cab with 20 seconds left to go. In all the locations the human time bombs stake out their spot and then close their eyes and start to concentrate. Their veins collectively bulge and just when I think their heads might explode the ground under and around them starts shaking as tremors wrack the areas they are in.

That was our teasing opener and now it's time for the credits.

Back at the meeting of the Fringe minds, Peter and Walter explain they thought that Westfield was David Robert Jones' testing ground. He managed to merge the universes, destroying both sides, but he had created a safe zone that was left intact. They figure that he has a safe zone planned out for when he annihilates the universes. Walter thinks that he is probably stocking his weird collections of freakish beings within the safe zone so he will be able to populate his new world. Broyles questioningly equates it to Noah's Ark and Walter nods, "Something like that, yes."

Walternate is pulled out of the meeting due to an urgent message he must attend to. Seconds later Broyles and the Olivias receive phone calls. While they all attend to their business, Peter commends Walter on the way he handled the meeting. Walter is concerned that Walternate detests him so much that he can't even stay in the same room. Peter assures him that the important part was Walter was able to have everyone listen and digest his ideas.

Broyles concludes his phone call saying, "Emergency Services is receiving reports of earthquakes happening all over the world." Altlivia pipes up, "Worlds. Sadly on our side too." Walter is convinced that Jones is behind this.

In the Fringe Division Headquarters on the Other Side AltAstrid rattles off the statistics of the earthquakes while Lincoln (who is still chillin' on the Other Side) and AltLivia listen.

Back in the AmberVerse Olivia, Peter and Astrid are paralleling the think session in progress in the Altverse. Walter is busy sniffing a tennis shoe while he is wearing headphones. Then Walter is satisfied with his sniffing and listening and removes the headphones, telling the others he thinks he understands now.

The shoe and other items that he had been looking at were from the epicenter of the quake that hit Manhattan. Through his earlier testing on a dead body and a severed hand, both from each universe respectively, he had discovered that this side vibrates at a C whereas the Altverse vibrates at a G. But the objects from the epicenter vibrate at an entirely different frequency, the key of E.

He says that Jones is creating the earthquakes by trying to tune the two universes to vibrate at a common frequency. Walter predicts there will be more earthquakes and since Jones' actions are continually weakening the barrier between the worlds it will soon be too much strain and "collapse is inevitable." He illustrates his point with the children's game "Don't Break the Ice," emphasizing how by repeatedly tapping in the right locations will result in destruction.

At the Fringe Division Headquarters on the Other Side Lincoln gets an unexpected visitor. Well, okay, it's actually AltLinc who would've been getting a visitor, but since he's no longer around OurLinc-turned-surrogate-AltLinc has to pretend he knows who this person is. The visitor is Nick Lane and claims to have known Lincoln from their old neighborhood and also because Lincoln canoodled with his sis.

Nick has come to Lincoln because although at the time he knew nothing about the earthquakes he had a vision of himself standing in the street in the middle of it all.

When Astrid reviews the video of the quake in Sidney she notices that there is one woman who is not running about willy-nilly in a panic. Plus, the woman is standing right on the epicenter. Needless to say she's looking a little suspicious.

Then Lincoln calls Olivia and at first I thought that the Other Side must have the best phone lines in the worlds to be able to call across an entire universe. (Their tech is more advanced than ours, ya know.) But upon the rewatch, I think he's calling from the bridge room. Anyway pointless analysis aside, he tells Olivia about Nick Lane and his vision. Because in Nick's vision there were no Twin Towers it means that what he saw happened on the Amberside. Olivia immediately recognizes the name Nick Lane. Before the facial recognition can complete on the woman in Sydney, Olivia says that it was Sally Clark. Facial Rec confirms her claim. Olivia knows both of them from her childhood Cortexiphan trials. It now appears that instead of using his harvested Amphilicite to wreak his newest havoc Jones is using Cortexiphan Kids.

Walter as usual, cannot squelch the scientist in him entirely and says, "It's horrible and deranged, but you have to agree, it's really quite ingenious." Okay, here we go, I'm going to try to translate Walterspeak -- Jones is having the Cortexiphan subjects on this side psychically link with their alternates and in doing so they channel the frequency of the OtherSide to where they are here. This is what's causing the earthquakes.

Hesitantly Peter asks Walter if it could be the bridge link between the universes that is making it possible for the Cortexiphan kids to merge with their alternates. Walter gets immediately what Peter is alluding to and says, "You're not suggesting--" Peter jumps in with a resigned, "Yes, I am."

Walter already looks nervous about this prospect and says that although closing the link between the universes would also deter Jones' plans he doesn't know if they would ever be able to reopen the portal between the universes. When Olivia questions him about the repaired areas on the Other Side Walter explains that any progress that had been made would not be lost but it would no longer continue to get better.

Peter quietly says, "There's no other alternative Walter." Reminding me very much of his demeanor when he made up his mind to go into the machine the first time. And whatever happened to the Peter that always said, "There's got to be another way."? I guess after so many ups and downs you stop looking for the other answer. Oh wait, Olivia has an idea ... they need to find Jones and stop the next attack.

And what an idea it is, truly born of her having worked with Walter all these years ... Lincoln and AltLiv pack up their Nick Lane and bring him on over to party down with the other Fringe Division. Walter slips him some Cortexiphan, screws a head collar on him and attaches some electrodes. Olivia explains to him that she's going to use him to connect to the Nick Lane she knew as a child. When Nick questions the sensibility of these tactics Lincoln says, "I find it's best if you just ... go with it."

AltLivia and Olivia share a moment where Liv explains that she likes to come to Olivia's side for the simple things that they no longer have on hers. She says that they haven't had a rainbow Over There for 20 years. She had gotten her hopes up thinking as her side started healing that maybe rainbows would make a reappearance. She says, "I still find myself looking up after it rains."

Then Olivia is called over to assume her position. Walter does the final prep on Nick, dropping something into his mouth with a pair of tongs, asking him "Have you ever tried LSD?" You didn't think that LSD wouldn't be involved, did you?

So Olivia trips her way into Nick's mind, or maybe Olivia visits Nick's trippy mind. I don't know either way, Olivia sees AmberNick and describes his surroundings. Looks like there won't be any making out with strippers on the agenda today for ol' Nicky, he's got a universe to destroy.

Lincoln and Peter are hanging out beside the Nissan SUVs [*product placement*] in the parking lot, waiting for a location. Astrid radios them to say they better get to Salem. Olivia continues talking and providing more details. She is able to see someone with a Salem Bay University jacket on. Lincoln and Peter head for that.

Lincoln and Peter screech to a stop on the campus. [MAJOR Nissan product placement as the emblem on the grill fills up the screen. -- I'm not complaining by the way, it's become kind of fun for me to see if I can catch all the blatant product placement in all of today's television shows, sometimes it's worked in pretty seamlessly, like this scene, but sometimes it's quite glaring.]

Olivia is still trying to come up with more specific details as to where on campus Nick is. She can see that he's looking at his wrist timer and she realizes he's in the quad. Right before Nick does his thang and makes the earth quake he is nabbed by Pecoln and Co.

Unfortunately, although they may've averted the disaster directly on hand the rest of the there are still areas popping up all over the map that are getting the shakes. Vancouver is included this time around, funny that the lab looked stable. Oh, that's right, they are in Boston, not Vancouver, wherever did I get that silly idea? *wink*

Nick Lane (the naughty one) is now being held for questioning. Olivia, Walter and Peter meet with Broyles to discuss the developments so far. The timer that they took off of Nick has parts in it that are not from this side. Broyles wants to know how many more earthquakes the universes will be able to withstand before the end comes. Walter says, "Frankly, I'm surprised it hasn't happened already." They all digest this for a moment and then Broyles says he has to go to Washington because they want to discuss turning the machine off.

Olivia wants to be the one to interrogate Nick because she hopes that their childhood friendship will enable her to get more information out of him. Nick knows right away who she is but he still refuses to tell her where Jones is.

Nick tells Olivia that "the war", what they warned them about and prepared them for as children is now happening. He insists that Jones is one of the good guys. Nick and the others have been told by Jones that they are helping to save this universe from the Other Side. Nick explains that the quakes on this side are collateral damage and though only a small amount of damage is being caused here it is much worse on the Other Side. Nick says, "Jones says one more offensive and the Other Side will surrender."

Random observation: Nick looks like he's got a scar in the shape of a 2 on his left temple.

Olivia tries to convince him that he is merely a pawn in Jones' endgame, and that the two universes are actually co-existing now.

Meanwhile, Peter is looking at the timer under a magnifying glass and finds a piece that has label on it. He's hoping that he will be able to use that to get more information. Peter and Lincoln talk a bit about the closing of the bridge and the impact it will have. Peter mentions that it will be odd once they are out of communication with the Other Side. Peter says, "If the bridge does have to be closed at least everything goes back to the way it's supposed to be ... well, almost everything." Lincoln replies, "You mean you. Because you're from the other universe but you're gonna stay here." Peter pauses for a moment and tells him, "I've come to the opinion that home is where the heart is."

The timer comes alive in Peter's hands and starts a countdown from 5:59:41. Olivia takes it into Nick and tries to appeal to his humanity by telling him that if he doesn't help that "in less than six hours everything you know and everyone you may love will cease to exist." That whole "everyone you love" thing touches a nerve and Nick tells a story about how when he was younger he wanted to kill himself. He made up his mind he was going to slit his wrists. He had the knife in his hand when his parents called to tell him that his sister had just committed suicide by cutting her wrists.

Jones told Nick that he was a reverse empath, meaning that his emotions rubbed off on other people. Nick chokes out, "That is what Walter Bishop and William Bell did to me." Walter is watching from behind the two-way mirror and absorbs these words with a shameful look. Jones taught Nick how to control his problem. Jones made him think that the Other Side was going to rebel against us and Nick thought that he was using his abilities to help protect this world.

Olivia tries again to explain that DRJ is nothing but a big fat liar. Then she tells Nick "Even if you don't help us, we still have a way to stop Jones." I'm not really sure why she told him that, to me that was her bargaining chip. I guess because in her next few sentences she tells him of all the people in the Other Universe that will be hurt if the bridge is closed, still hoping to guilt him into it.

Nick gives in and offers what little information he has. He says one time he met Jones at a warehouse that was filled with gadgets that he didn't know what they were. He offers to take them there.

A SWAT team infiltrates the place, followed by Broyles, Olivia and Peter. Here's something I always mean to comment on and then forget. Usually in scenes like this involving a SWAT team decked out in body armor and helmets the actual Fringe Team comes rolling in there without even bullet-proof vests. (Occasionally they have BPVs but not often.) It's like they go in there and say "Bring it, we can handle anything you got, we've jumped universes, crossed timelines, fought shapeshifters, destroyed plagues, hunted down parasitic worms ... " well you get the idea. I know that a big part of it might be that the main cast is just too beautiful to cover up but I cringe every time they go in without protection.

Nick is sitting in the car with Tim/Tom whatever moniker Walter has christened him this week. He starts to get really shaky and I thought he was conjuring up another earthquake, but what he was actually doing was working his magic charms on Tim by talking about what a loser he, as in himself, was.

The warehouse is empty except for a huge air conditioning unit that is making a ton of noise. Olivia is called back to the car because there is a problem.

The aforementioned problem is that Nick put the whammy on Tim convincing him he was pathetic and Tim got the overwhelming urge to stab himself in the stomach. I cannot tell what he stabbed himself with. Possibly a pen.

Nick is now walking the streets again among a mob of people. A few of them cross in front of him and then he is just gone.

Both Fringe teams are again gathered in the conference room in the bridge area. This time the Astrids are included. The timer on the wall shows about 47 minutes until the next earthquake/meltdown of the universes. Broyles enters the room to say, "Washington has made their decision. They'll support whatever we decide in this room." Uh, so actually Washington made a decision to not make a decision. Okay then.

The camera spends some time reflecting on the faces of the gathered members as they process this information. Walternate speaks up first, stoically saying, "Okay. In that case, unless someone can think of alternative, something we haven't considered yet ... " Here no one offers any suggestions and Walter practically whispers, "No." Walternate continues, "I'm afraid we have to close the bridge."

At about the 36 minute mark Peter comes up to Walter asking, "Ready for me?" Upon Walter's agreement Peter places his forearm in the biometric device he and Walter created earlier in the season. It only takes about 30 seconds and the pushing of a couple levers before the Machine starts to emit smoke and an electronic voice announces, "System Overload initiated." Now they have to wait for the system to overload completely and then they will have to shut the machine down. Walter predicts it shouldn't take too long.

Okay, because I can't resist this and it was one of the best scenes ever in this series there will be a lot of quoting from here on out.
Walternate: This biomechanical interface of yours?
Walter: Peter and I figured it out, back when we thought the machine was the key to his returning home. Back to his timeline.
Walternate: He's really quite a remarkable boy, Peter. Man, actually.
Walter: Yes, he is.
Walternate: Smart, noble, kind. All the things I would've wished for him.
Walter: Could you excuse me for a moment?

Walter leaves and goes to sit down in the hallway, leaning up against a wall lost in his own thoughts. In the background the female electronic voice cheerfully keeps a tally of the current amount the system is overloaded, seeming more than happy to be the announcer of the splitting of two worlds. Walternate goes out into the hallway as well and sits down beside Walter.

He assumes almost the exact same posture as Walter, so they really do look like two twins sitting side by side.
Walternate: I know what you're afraid of. It occurs to me as I'm sure it occurs to you too that if the machine stops working Peter may disappear.
Walter: I believe it may have brought him here. There's no reason it can't take him away
Walternate: Twenty-five years ago you couldn't have made this decision, and you didn't.
Walter: I've come to accept that he's not ours.
Walternate: The universe is change, our life is what our thoughts make it.
Walter: Marcus Aurelius.
Walternate: Philosophy king. Who survived war and spent the rest of his life working for the betterment of his people. (He puts his hand on Walter's shoulder.) Perhaps we will too.
Walter: (Walter has tears streaming down his face.) We'll see.
Walternate leaves.

This scene was so awesome and sad and heartwarming and heartbreaking all at the same time. When John Noble gets his Emmy (wishful thinking) this is the scene they should show.

The bitter sweetness continues. Peter shakes Walternate's hand and swaggers over to Broyles to tell him it's time. Lincoln says Goodbye to Peter because he has decided to stay in the Altverse. He says, "You remember how you said, 'Home is where the heart is'? This might be crazy, but ... I think I found mine."

At this point the Overload is at 93 percent and now it's time for the Olivias to say Goodbye.
Altlivia: You know, there's a lot of things about you that I wish I had. There's a lot of things about you that I admire.
Olivia: That's funny. I was about to say the same thing about you. Keep looking up, after it rains. Keep looking up.
Altlivia: I will.

The Overload is now at 95 percent and the two teams separate so that they are on their own sides of the bridge room.

The Walters look at one another but they don't say anything. AltAstrid gives a little wave to Astrid who waves back. Olivia nods towards Lincoln and he reciprocates.

The Overload countdown reaches 100 percent and Walter says, "That's it. It's time." He hesitates for just a moment and throws the switch. There's lots of shaking and flickering and then the Alternate half of the room disappears, replaced by black emptiness.

Walter glances over and sees that Peter is still there with them. He walks over and rubs his shoulder saying, "I think that I shall miss them, more than I imagined."

Wow, my sentiments exactly Walter. I've grown quite attached to the Alternates this Season. I don't even know what to say about this episode. I was so keyed up between the time they started talking about seriously taking the bridge down until the end when they actually disappeared I was afraid to blink.

What did you think? Best episode ever? Please leave any comments or observations you wish to share. Thanks for reading.
Letters of Transit ... Original Airdate Friday April 20, 2012

This episode of Fringe starts with some back story scrolling up the screen. It foretells of a bleak future and what happened to make it be that way. The beings that have always been referred to as Observers remained true to their name, only watching key events in human history until 2015.

In 2015 they were no longer content to just watch events unfold before them and they took over. Although there were citizen revolts they led nowhere and resulted in much bloodshed. The people who made it through this period were dubbed "Natives."

Some of the Natives, after they swore their allegiance to the Observers, were given markings and branded as "Loyalists."

The original Fringe team fought against the Observer takeover but they were not able to overcome them.

Afterwards, the Fringe Division was cut down to lower numbers and their surviving function was to police the Natives.

The resistance was short lived.

***

Or was it?

In Boston 2036 a young blond haired woman raps on a door in a back alleyway. A man answers her knock and upon seeing her he greets her with "Agent," swinging the door outwards so she may enter the building.

She descends a staircase slowly looking inconspicuously around at the other occupants in the room. A vast majority of them are men who are pale, bald and dressed in dark colored suits. One of them is sitting in a chair and as a lady walks by him he forcefully grabs her arm and jerks her into his lap.

Another man walks over to the encounter he just witnessed. He does not have Observer qualities. He tells Mr. Handsy that his girl has another shift. Apparently the Observers have been "borrowing" the ladies at this Studio 54 for Observers and must not be returning them.

The seated Observer jumps up and flings his lady friend back into the chair. When he turns to face the other man he receives a punch in the gut and doubles over. Two men dressed in green military type uniforms run over and wrangle the guy who is getting out of hand. They both have writing in an unknown language on their right cheekbones so this marks them as Loyalists.

An older Observer by the name of Captain Windmark comes over and states that the Native is agitated. The Native furthers solidifies his remark by spitting in his face.

The Observer fixes him with a stare and the Native begins to tremble and his eyes seem to bulge out. Blood drips down the side of his neck. Suddenly there is a goopy sound and then the side of his neck is covered with blood. He slumps forward, being held up by the Loyalists.

The blond agent comes into view behind him and apologizes for his behavior. The Observer doesn't seem pleased about what just happened but the agent reminds him that since the man is a Native he is her jurisdiction and besides that if he is wiped there is a lot of paperwork involved and less kick backs for her.

He starts to give her the stink eye but when he tries to read her thoughts he just says, "I must say Agent, you are always exactly as you seem."

She takes the Native and they leave the club. He regains some of his composure outside in the alleyway, and through the conversation that takes place it appears that the Observers are not able to read what this Agent is really thinking, only what she wants them to hear.

The Native called her there to show her something and he leads her to the back of a van. She looks under a covering in the van and is surprised by what she sees underneath. The Native tells her that there were two more at the place where this one was, a younger man and woman but they couldn't all be moved at once. He is starting to tell her where the other two are when a popping sound is heard behind him and blood spews on the Agent's face. He collapses in the street. She grabs his keys and drives the van away.

There is an overhead shot of the night lights of the city. An announcement plays, "Attention: Curfew is now in effect. Agents, please return to your homes immediately."

She stops the van under an overpass and looks under the blanket again. As she pulls it back and shines a flashlight on what is below we see that it is Walter and he is encased in amber.

In the tradition of the episodes set in the future or past the Fringe opening credits contain different words and phrases than the usual ones for this Season. This has: Community, Joy, Individuality, Education, Imagination, Private Thought, Due Process, Ownership, Free Will, along with a huge gathering of people who are behind walls that are topped off with razor wire, and the word Freedom actually appearing inside the razor wire.

The blond agent, whose name is Etta goes back to her headquarters and meets up with her supervisor Agent Simon Foster. She tells him about the death of her informant (Rick, the guy that almost got wiped at the club) and blows his mind when she reveals that she has a member of the original Fringe Team. Simon had believed that they were either all dead at this point or even just a myth.

He is in such awe when he sees Walter he says, "I'll be a toe on a foot in a grave." In his hand Walter is holding an ambering device which shows that he actually did this to himself, as well as the rest of the team. It is so sad to see Walter contained in the amber.

The Observer, Captain Windmark, visits Broyles. Broyles has some wrinkles but other than that looks pretty much the same. Windmark is not happy that there has been Native on Native killings occurring recently and is expecting Broyles to do something about it or he will be forced to step in and take care of it himself. He implies if this were to happen Broyles would not like the way Windmark would remedy matters. He also advises Broyles, "I like you Phillip, but be assured, bite my hand and I will put you down." During this conversation Windmark removes a flask from his jacket and takes a swig, offering Broyles one as well. Broyles refuses, saying "It's water. It doesn't do anything for me." Apparently Observers drink water like humans would alcohol.

When Broyles questions him Windmark explains that he got the job he has because, "I like animals." I didn't really get that, I'm assuming he's referring to the Natives as animals.

Simon is working some molecular magic trying to figure out how to get Walter out of the amber. In order for them to get Walter out without them getting stuck in there themselves Etta has to get some special devices that were being held as old evidence to help bust him out. The guy in charge of the evidence room (or more so, cage) drops some hints that people (he may as well have air quoted people to mean Observers) are starting to think that Simon might be walking the line a bit too much.

She takes the tech back to Simon and they get it powered up. It was formerly used as a crowd control device before things starting getting resolved with more violence, less peacefulness. Once they activate it towards Walter's amber block the block crumbles and he flies out of the back, the force of the energy expelled crashing him against the wall.

He starts to recover and they introduce themselves, explaining that he's been inside the amber for 20 years. Walter replies, "20 years? It's no wonder I'm so hungry. Do you have anything to eat?"

They get him set up with some Red Licorice, although they don't appear to be Red Vines. According to the stories they have read, these are Walter's favorite food. While Etta shows Walter a holographic blueprint of a creation that the original Fringe team was reportedly working on to get rid of the Observers he is busy asking "What do you call it?" Simon thinks he is talking about the blueprinted object but Walter admonishes him, chuckling out "No, no, no, no you silly-billy. This," indicating the licorice. When Walter starts repeating the word licorice to himself and giggling cheerfully, before asking Etta who she is as though they hadn't just met, they realize that something is not quite right with dear Dr. Bishop.

They do an MRI on Walter and find out he has brain damage. While in the MRI machine Walter refers to Simon as Peter.

Etta goes to visit the Ministry of Science building in New York and meets with Nina Sharp. Nina is now travelling around in a wheelchair and her hair is shockingly silver compared to her normal red. Under the guise of inquiring about new equipment for her division Etta seemingly incurs Nina's wrath for bothering her with petty details and during her lunch break.

However, upon a trip outside of the building it is revealed that Nina and Etta are actually working together. Etta tells Nina that they haven't been able to figure out from Walter where the others are ambered. Nina realizes the extent of Walter's damage when he doesn't even remember her, then he wanders off and amuses himself jumping and dancing around on a bench.

They ask Nina for help in getting Walter back in working order because they know that he and his team saved the world once before and are hoping that they can do it again. Nina says, "Yes, they did. But not without great consequence."

She tells them though, that Massive Dynamic has pieces of Walter's brain that he had William Bell cut out long ago. She thinks that if they can reintroduce the pieces that were removed it could help his brain heal itself. When asked why the bits of his brain were removed, Nina says "I don't think he liked the person he was becoming."

The catch to this plan (as if reintegrating brain tissue wasn't enough) is that the brain tissue is being stored at the old Massive Dynamic building in the city. And the city is chock full of Observers.

While Simon and Etta go to secure transit passes for their trip into the city Walter hangs with Nina. He fiddles with her bionic arm, seeing that it no longer works. Even though she tries to tell him not to worry with it his tinkering fixes the arm and she is quite happy to be able to move it around again. When told they are going to the city Walter says, "I do hope we are going to the circus."

John Noble again hits it out of the park playing yet another version of Walter. This version is childlike, but in a more hopeful way than before. The versions of Walter right after he came out of St. Claire's were childlike for different reasons, in the way that he couldn't function in society.

The rail station is teeming with Observers, all in their suits and hats, scurrying along with their briefcases. Walter is distracted by a candy cart for a few moments until he gets a good look at one of the Observers. He gets defiant and shouts "Monster!" while pointing at him.

One of the Military Police with the cheek markings comes up to see what the trouble is with what he assumes is a prisoner. Simon explains that they are Fringe Agents and are taking Etta's grandfather to see his wife's grave as this is the anniversary of her death. They maintain that he is on the crazy side and is on a day pass from the home. Walter sails right along on the crazy train by rambling about not being a number and then laughing somewhat hysterically. He follows that up with, "These aren't the droids you are looking for." Finally after the snarky MP lets them go, Walter finishes with, "Move along," as he looks him dead in the eye. Walter snags a candy bar on the way by the display he had seen earlier.

I still don't know whether Walter's actions here were contrived or actually him being him.

As predicted, in the city there are more Observers everywhere. They go to the building that used to house Massive Dynamic. Walter gets deja vu and Etta explains to him that it's probably real memories because she's sure he's been there before in the past. As they cross the underground parking deck they unknowingly trudge through a laser alarm that alerts someone on Broyles' team to their presence.

Inside Massive Dynamic they find Walter's wayward brain tissue and have a rather gross conversation comparing it to monkey feces and then talk turns to the taste of brains. Simon gives Walter some medicine to knock him out for a bit so that when they inject the dissolved brain matter into his head it will hopefully bond more quickly. While waiting for the meds to kick in to make him go night-night Walter reveals, "I love LSD!"

Riffing on the fact that Simon's name is like the game, as he starts to get drowsy Walter says, "Simon says 'Go to sleep now Walter.'" They plunk him in a chair and then wait to see if their experiment will take hold.

As they wait they share stories of what is called "The Purge." This is what they call the period in 2015 when Observers worldwide started going to people's houses, removing them and then killing them in the streets. Simon was in college when this happened and his parents were killed. It was at that time that he knew he would not rest until the Observers were overthrown.

Etta says the last time she saw her parents she was four years old. It's been so long that she doesn't even remember what they look like. As she speaks she fingers her necklace.

Walter sits up suddenly and groans. In a matter of seconds he completely sheds his bumbling persona and is all business. His voice holds authority and stature. Right away he recognizes the object that Simon is holding (the blueprint device) and takes it from him. He asks relevant questions like what year it is and if the Observers are still around.

In the parking deck the Military Police and an Observer have arrived and they are following the convenient path of footprints on the floor. The Observer tells them to "Shoot first, I'll read them later."

While looking at the blueprint hologram Walter tells Simon and Etta about September, explaining that he was one of the good Observers. Walter says what happened to September was "unexpected." He goes on to say that September told him "that in the year 2609 AD [the Observers] finally ruled the planet. They poisoned it. The air, the water, and when it was fundamentally uninhabitable they travelled back through time and took our planet from us."

After Walter says he can build the device depicted in the blueprint Etta brings up finding his team so they will be able to help him. He stares at her for a long moment and then starts to say, "You--" but is cut off by the dinging of an elevator. He realizes that they must've tripped an alarm and calls them both idiots for not disabling that system beforehand.

Then he walks over to one of the bare white walls and places his palm flat on it. A second later a circle of light appears underneath his hand. A piece of the wall slides over into itself, giving them an opening to leave. Walter explains, "Neither Belly or I ever left ourselves only one way out of a room. Come on."

Team Observer and MP arrive almost directly after they leave the room. Walter, Etta and Simon are running down a maze of hallways when the Observer pulls out a ray-gun. He pulls the trigger and it issues a kind of energy wave that causes both Walter and Etta to careen into the corridor's walls and fall to the ground. Simon helps Etta up and Walter shouts out the directions they need to follow.

They continue on, not realizing that Walter did not follow them. They backtrack to see where he is and find him in another room assembling a cylindrical object. He takes the battery from Simon's watch and uses it to power the gadget while telling them, "Resistance must take place at any opportunity. We are insurgents and this is anti-matter. You're smart, you do the math." The contraption he has put together begins to emit puffs of white smoke from the top of it. They hurriedly exit the room and find a way out of the building.

The Observer and his police escorts walk into the room that Walter left his little present in. A look of panic crosses the Observers face and the scene cuts to a street with the building off in the background. Walter mentions his team was ambered close to where they are now. There is a fizzling sound and both Simon and Etta spin around in time to see the building they just came out of flash blue and then blip out of sight. Walter doesn't even turn around, he just walks in the opposite direction telling them to hurry.

In what looks like an underground tunnel Etta is now standing in front of a wall of amber. On the left and right there are two figures, but it's hard to make out who they are. In the middle a large chunk is missing, from where Walter had been cut out earlier.

Simon asks Etta about the odd behavior between her and Walter back at Massive Dynamic but she doesn't say anything except that Walter's not playing with a full deck.

At the Boston Federal Building Broyles has a video conversation with the policeman that talked to Simon and Etta when they were taking Walter through the rail station. After the call is concluded he has one of his other Agents turn on Simon's internal tracking chip. He also tells him to assemble a team.

While they wait for the amber busting tools to warm up Simon divulges to Walter, "You know, I think you're just what we've been waiting for. Someone to show people that we don't have to just accept our fate. That we can fight back, that we can use our will and our imagination to make a better world, a better life." Walter responds, "In that case, a little more focus and a little less pontificating and we might have the job done by now."

Their equipment is ready and they use it to blast Astrid out of the amber and into Walter's arms. He greets her with "Hello, Astro." Then there's a problem with the machine and they are unable to get it to sync with the other piece that allows them to disintegrate the amber. Simon realizes that his tracker must've been turned on and this is somehow affecting their progress.

Astrid comes upon a block of amber that is currently housing William Bell. Walter walks up to her and whispers, "Shhh" and brandishes a small silver tool.

They only have enough power to turn the amber into a gaseous state for a few moments. Simon begins a countdown and tells Etta, "We need him," with a small smile as she starts to get teary.

Broyles' team comes upon the ambered block and Broyles sees that Simon is encased inside. On a shelf he finds a piece of red licorice and realization dawns.

On the subway train Astrid is asking how Walter could leave Bell in the amber. In answer Walter says, "You remember what he did to Olivia. Even you can't be that compassionate." Astrid questions how they will get access without him. Walter quiets her and reaches down into his duffle bag, pulling out a round cut-out of amber. There is a severed hand inside. Walter puts it back and says, "We have everything we need."

Etta is staring out of the back window of the train car as she is playing with the object on her necklace. We finally get a look at what it is and to me it looks like a bullet slug.
Peter walks up beside her saying, "I'm sorry about your friend. We'll do everything we can to get him back. I promise."
They look at each other for a long moment before Etta speaks, "Do you know me?"
Peter squints a moment and says, "I don't know how I could. I've been stuck in that amber for over 20 years, you barely look old enough ..."
Etta's eyes are filling up with tears and all of a sudden Peter realizes something. He says, "Henrietta." A statement more than a question.
He starts to touch her face as she says, "Hi Dad." Then he wraps her up in a hug and they cling to each other.

The End.

The What?

Yep, the end. Bad Wo-Bot comes zipping across the screen to say it's so.

So now of course the big question. What the hell happened to Olivia? Is that thing that Etta is wearing around her neck the bullet that killed her?

This episode is supposed to be kind of a possible set-up for Season 5. Still no word on that by the way. Although there was a commercial during the show that said there was a contest that involved winning a trip to a Fringe fan event that is being held this summer. That gives me hope.

Tonight was the Live Tweet with Jeff Pinkner, Joel Wyman and Joshua Jackson. Jeff Pinkner was on during the East Coast feed. Joel was on during both and Josh was on during the West Coast.

Joel responded to one of my tweets which was very exciting for me. There was a live tweet earlier this year and he responded to two of mine. (Under my older Twitter name.) I just love the way that the producers and cast of this show interacts with the fans. It's easy to tell that they are fans too and that makes all the difference in the world.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This was my tweet:

<span style="color: black; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Expanding a bit ... I don't like that these Observers are out to get everyone. What's up with that? I'm used to September who understands human emotion.

<span style="color: black; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I liked this episode. As usual I would like to have more Peter. At least usually when we don't have much Peter we get a lot of Olivia. But this one was definitely interesting and now we've seen a possible future and met their daughter.

<span style="color: black; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I had automatically assumed that the younger man and woman that were with Walter was Olivia and Peter. I didn't realize until after Astrid popped that Olivia wasn't around.
